Fresh Spins on idobi Radio 5/5/2023

It is May, the fifth month of 2023. We’re almost halfway through. That means longer days, warmer nights and plenty of opportunity to blast music as loud as possible. Well, there is no finer place to find that music to blast than on  idobi Radioidobi Howl and idobi Anthm, where new music is added every single week. From pop bangers to metalcore experiments, it’s all here and all brilliant.

Here are some of the best of the best of what has hit the airwaves just now…

Mayday Parade – More Like A Crash

Is there a more consistent band when it comes to the scene than Mayday Parade? Producing heartfelt and honest pop-punk for almost 20 years, their latest chapter starts with “More Than A Crash.” A track that feels like a culmination of where they have been and where they want to be, it’s a patient and powerful piece of singalong-ready joyfulness. We’re incredibly lucky to have them and should never take them for granted.

Psycho-Frame – Dragging Nazarene

Though the deathcore renaissance of the last few years has been refreshing for heavy music, something is still missing. That’s the sheer brute force that defined the genre back at its inception in the late 00s. Psycho-Frame is aware of this hole and is filling it with utter violence, as their debut EP Remote God Seeker, demonstrates. “Dragging Nazarene” is just one example of head-mangling devastation that appears on it, with breakdowns like ice picks and vocals conjured from the seventh circle. Absolutely essential stuff.

shallow pools – IHYK

Even after all these years, Equal Vision remains the place for fresh and fierce bands to call their home. shallow pools are a prime example of what they have in their ranks currently, and their new track, “IHYK,” is a great reason why they are so central to the success. Delicate, pop-speckled emo beautifulness with a dash of indie sensibility for good measure, this is a late afternoon summer bop if you’ve ever heard one. Get it on the playlist.

Siamese – The Shape Of Water Feat. ten56.

Siamese have been making a name for themselves on both sides of the Atlantic over the last 18 months, with all the pieces of their decade-long journey all falling into place. And it’s because of songs like “The Shape Of Water” that they are making such strides. Dramatic, decadent and dripping in dynamic pulses, it’s an absolute bruiser featuring Aaron Matts of ten56. who delivers a crushing performance. It’s a combination that will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention.

Tally Spear – Alone Again

Tally Spear is the sort of artist that comes along once in a blue moon. Bridging the gap between LA’s sound and London’s attitude, she delivers devilish and dark pop music designed to ensnare the senses. Her latest offering is “Alone Again,” a pop-rock/hyper-pop hybrid full of surprising heaviness and gripping bars. The result is sporadic and sensational, the sort of song that helps to define an era.

Left To Suffer – Artificial Anatomy Feat. Kim Dracula

Though knocking your teeth clean out your mouth is Left To Suffer’s main prerogative, they also want to change perceptions with their brand of heavy music. That’s why they are working with artists like Kim Dracula, one of the most fascinating new artists in alternative music. Adding their brand of unhinged attitude to LTS’ unrelenting brutality is a match made in Heaven, and the result will make your skin crawl in the most wonderful ways.

SMRTDEATH – Death Row Honeymoon

SMRTDEATH has always been one of the most creative and boundary-destroying the of the emo-rap boom of the last half a decade. Delving into different waters with every track, “deathrow honeymoon” is much of the same, with darkly romantic intent and a grunge-tinged instrumental. It’s fun and fierce and full of hard-hitting story-telling and emotion, and it doesn’t get much better than that.

Halocene – Maleficent

In the market for some dark and delicious rock and roll? Halocene is going to be your new obsession, then. A viral sensation in their own right, their original latest track, “Maleficent,” does exactly what it says on the tin, with pitch-black intentions and darkly atmospheric attitudes. Vocalist Addie Amick is a star in the making, with a voice that is as heavenly as it is haunting, and musically the band combine hard rock and modern metalcore brilliantly. Get on board now.

Chez – Friends feat. State Champs

If you’re going to get a band in to enhance your track, you can’t get much better than State Champs. Pop-punk royalty in every sense, Chez knows this as well, and that’s why Derek DiScanio has a starring role on her new track “Friends.” A takedown of shitty people and how sometimes all you need is yourself to have a good time, it’s a chest-beating anthem of the highest calibre. Get stuck in and get to know.

CXLOE – Flight Risk

Pop music is at its best when it crosses the streams multiple times. Take CXLOE’s latest offering, “Flight Risk,” which is as insanely catchy as it is cathartic and vulnerable. Pulling together classic melodies with a sensibility that dips into emotional EDM, all wrapped in a breathy indie shell, it’s an incredible journey of a song that sticks with you long after it has ended.
