Another week and another incredible array of new music for you to dive into. From the most refreshing pop-punk to the most revolting deathcore, a bit of everything has been added to idobi Radio, idobi Howl and idobi Anthm, and that will never ever change.
So, here’s the best of the best of what you will be hearing for the foreseeable…
Arrows In Action – “Head In The Clouds”
Arrows In Action are on one hell of a hot streak at the moment. Following up “The Credits”, their excellent collaboration with Loveless and Magnolia Park, they have “Head In The Clouds”. Channelling the light, carefree nature of the mid-00s pop-punk movement in the most exuberant and beautifully life-affirming ways is a feel-good anthem for the ages. From the quirk-filled instrumental to the choral refrain, it’s an absolute summer essential already.
Mental Cruelty – “Forgotten Kings”
What do you get when you combine the brute force of deathcore with the majesty of black metal? You get Mental Cruelty, one of Germany’s most desolating exports. Following up on their astonishing 2021 album A Hill To Die Upon, “Forgotten Kings” is everything you could ever want from extreme music. Radiant beauty, bone-breaking brutality and the sort of fantastical world-building that you only find in novel form. Pitch-black brilliance.
LENNYJ. – “You & i”
LENNYJ. states that they make “coming of age music that makes girls dance and boys cry”, and it’s hard to argue with that when it concerns “You & i”. Like Secondhand Serenade for a new generation, he combines pop-punk sentiment and pop-rock earnestness with thoroughly modern production to devastating effect. The result is a song that bristles with romantic intent and takes you crashing back into that first time you felt the butterflies take over your stomach. Send it to your crush.
Mighty Tortuga – “Let Me Down”
Like the sea breeze hitting your face as you stand by the coast, Mighty Tortuga craft the sort of punk rock that reminds you why it feels so good to be alive. Let Me Down washes over you with wave after wave of heart and soul, with a chorus that will be embedded in your head for weeks to come. With their new EP, The Plague Inside Your Head, set for release in June, you have plenty of time to fall head over heels for them.
In Fear – “Death Sequence”
In Fear are on course to release their debut album, All Is. All Shall Be. next month, and they are doing it at some pace. And with tracks like “Doom Sequence” firmly under their belt, it’s set to be an absolute bruiser. Perfectly combining the cold steel of British metalcore with the ethereal glistening of US post-hardcore, it’s a track that rips and tears from all angles and don’t ever break a sweat. Future world-beaters in the making.
In The Mourning – “Leave (Get Out)”
There’s nothing like a classic to get you going, and few songs deserve the title of classic more than Jojo’s “Leave (Get Out)”. A staple in 00’s RnB culture, In The Mourning have brought it crashing into 2023 in the most incredible way. Adding layers of energetic pop-punk and undeniable attitude, it instantly transforms into a festival sing-along. Celebrating the past and loving what the future holds, it doesn’t get much better than that!
Ten56. – “Choky”
Ten56. make creating the sonic equivalent of a panic attack look effortless. “Choky” is their latest tentacled banger, pushing you into a corner and grabbing at your inhibitions with utter glee. As claustrophobic as it is catastrophic, the band are carving out a name as one of the UK’s most vicious and vital assets more and more with every passing track.
Chad Kowel – “ALT POP”
Titling your own track after a whole genre of music is a bold move, but the payoff is enormous when that song perfectly sums up what that genre should be. That’s the case with Chad Kowal and his new hit “ALT POP”, which has all the brightness of modern-day pop wrapped up tightly in an aggressive and angular alternative shell. It’s bold, brash and brazen in all the most colourful and cathartic ways, and it feels like the manifesto for a special artist to come.
Patient Sixty-Seven – “Hibbertia”
Crabcore enthusiasts Patient Sixty-Seven have allowed themselves to dive even deeper into the genre that they love so much. “Hibbertia” embodies all the pure pummelling of bands that have come before but manages to make it feel thoroughly modern and fresh rather than dated and fusty. With more breakdowns than you’ve had hot dinners, and plenty of gorgeous drama for good measure, you better be bending those knees and getting in position.
North Of 64 – “Letting Go”
Heading towards the release of their new EP “Loving & Letting Go”, North of 64 decided to team up with one of pop-punk’s finest voices for one of the tracks. That track is “Letting Go”, a spirited piece of emotional pop-punk, and that voice is Jordan Black of Like Pacific. Putting in a pitch-perfect performance to match the band’s heavy-hitting blend of heart and soul, it’s a winning combination that will be stuck in your head for the next few weeks.
