After weeks of speculation, twenty-one pilots have finally announced their new album, Clancy, and dropped the first single, “Overcompensate.” The LP is slated to be released on May 17 and marks the duo’s sixth studio album.
The music video opens with a body of dark blue water, followed by an urgent-sounding synth that mimics an alarm, building tension before transitioning into a jazzy, drum-led section of the song accompanied by a distorted voice welcoming everyone back to Trench. Vocalist Tyler Joseph slowly chimes in with the lines, “I created this world/To feel some control/Destroy it if I want it/So I sing Sahlo Folina.” The beat transforms into a traditional hip-hop beat, which leads Joseph into his introspective rap verses partnered with melodic choruses.
“Sahlo Folina,” translates into enabling expressive creations. With their world-building throughout their careers, they’ve demonstrated that they don’t hold back with their art. This is evident throughout the music video, which houses a red, black, and grey color motif. It breaks down that those in the more vibrant garbs are in a power position, while those in grey must listen to their orders or rebel. The final shot leaves you in the dreary outside world with drummer Josh Dun pulling a small boat to shore, and Joseph with glowing ember eyes, mimicking ending a spell he’s cast upon the Trenches.
Last week, the Skeleton Clique got to work on deciphering the cryptic video that was posted on the band’s Instagram. While no one’s adverse to their fragmented messages, the mythical tale they laid out incorporates many key characters from previous twenty one pilots musical themes. Blurryface, the banditos, and a poetry-like narration, along with other easter eggs, build anticipation for this next phase for the alt-rockers.

Fans can pre-order the LP on their site. With a few different options from four vinyl variants: a limited edition black and red splatter, dual color (black and white), marble grey and black, plus the classic simple black record to cassettes, a CD journal, and boxsets, listeners have their pick of how to immortalize this new era.
The tracklist is included on the order page. “Overcompensate” introduces the 13-track adventure and ends with a song titled “Paladin Strait.” With this current sound that’s amplified what they’ve previously put out, twenty one pilots continue to stun the scene.
