Stand Atlantic, with the help of their “girls, girls, girls,” PVRISLynn Gunn and Bruses, is reclaiming the power of the male gaze in a satirical and refreshing way. Today, the female-led powerhouse trio has unleashed the liberating new collaborative track, “GIRL$.”

“I feel like the message of the song speaks for itself,” Stand Atlantic frontwoman Bonnie Fraser shares. “I wanted to show my appreciation for women and, personally, my experience growing up knowing I was attracted to women but still feeling like I had to fit the mold of the male gaze, just based on the way I was influenced by a male-dominated society. And I hope other queer women and women in general resonate with this track, but also anyone in between. I wrote it for anyone who’s ever felt squashed by the strange and subtle pressures society can place on young people based off old-as-shit paradigms.”

She continues, “That being said, having Lynn (PVRIS) and Amalia (BRUSES) on this track made it so much more meaningful to me personally—both female, queer, and talented artists I respect so much. making this music video was a friggen gas. Me and Lynn both had the same idea independently of each other when she agreed to be on the track: ‘Let’s be old ladies.’ I’m sure people expected us all to be selling sex and queer baiting the shit out of this—so we did what any rap video would do but as old ladies.”

Their tongue-in-cheek music video, playfully dissecting the concept of the male gaze through the portrayal of Bonnie and Lynn as older versions of themselves, serves as a captivating visual representation of their message of self-acceptance and love for women. Across the chorus, “Too pretty/Too ugly/Too skinny/Too slutty/No money/Not funny,” the trio boldly defies societal norms and expectations. And from one woman to three others, they look pretty damn good doing it from where I’m sitting. Check out the visual for “GIRL$” below.

In addition to their parody video, which they filmed in Stand Atlantic’s home base in Sydney, Australia, further poking fun at the portrayal of the male gaze, the band has announced the release of their forthcoming full-length, WAS HERE.
