RØRY spent 2022 becoming one of the most exciting and emotional artists to come out of the UK in a long time, taking all the talent they had shared by writing for others and injecting it into their own art. And that trend of delivering absolute heart-wrenching bangers is continuing into this year with the release of this new track.
That is “ALTERNATIVE”, a song written about how life would be different if the childhood she experienced was different. It’s a bare-bones look at trauma in its most potent form, and in revisiting the past and wondering what could have been, we are instantly one with RØRY as a human being as well as an artist. Blood, sweat and tears have been dripped onto every second of this pop-punk opus, and it is all the most intense and affecting for it.
RØRY had this to say about the song:
“ALTERNATIVE is about imagining who I would be, with a different childhood. It’s making the link between my own addictions, and those of my father. How our parents give us a blueprint for love and intimacy and that my blueprint was lies, deceit, affairs, and abuse. The relationship I grew up watching, led me to repeat these patterns in my own life. It was only through therapy that I was able to see the destructive pattern I was part of, and take ownership of my own behaviour. Realising how much life I had lost to addiction brought about a deep grief for the decade I would never get back, for the person I would never become. The song is an ode to an alternative version of me, one that is perhaps a lot happier.”
It follows on from “December Hurts”, a festive song unlike any other:
