It’s no secret that the alternative scene and the music industry as a whole have evolved immensely since the days of Myspace posts and Limewire downloads. In a recent interview with UPROXX, Paramore members Hayley Williams, Zac Farro, and Taylor York sat down with Carolyn Droke for a December cover story. Of course, the This Is Why artists discussed their humble beginnings and Williams‘ growing pains in finding her place in a male-dominated pop-punk world.

Also, the trio has had the unique opportunity, not only to evolve in their sound and mature with fans, but they’ve also witnessed the myriad changes experienced in the music industry. Of course, the notion of self-promotion has changed immensely as social media isn’t just one or two sites, it now includes Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and more. Labels are less of a necessity when it comes to getting music out to listeners when you know how to hack an algorithm. Overall, Williams noted that these new changes aren’t bad at all.
She noted to UPROXX, “We are a band that has survived a lot of technological advances, a lot of cultural upheavals. I don’t understand how we’re still here, truly, but I feel very fortunate.”
With newer apps such as TikTok, Paramore has been able to reach new fans of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities. “To see a room that’s full of this many different kinds of people, to try to champion that and leave space for anyone that loves music with guitars,” Williams shared with UPROXX. “It’s so cool to watch people reclaim the emo scene or the alternative world and be like, ‘There always should have been room for all of us.'”

While York is grateful for the band’s reach on social media, he is elated that Paramore didn’t have to begin their career the way newer musicians do. “I don’t know if we would be able to survive that if we were starting right now,” he tells UPROXX. “I can’t imagine feeling like we have to stay in front of people all the time for them to care. So in some ways, we have to be a part of these cultural shifts if we want to relate to people. But at the same time, we’re not going to put up 10 videos to the same clip of a song.”
