MOD SUN is certainly living up to his name, which stands for “Modern Sunshine,” with his stunning yet melancholy new ballad, “Sunshine.” The track, which arrives today and beautifully reimagines the children’s lullaby, was co-written by MOD, Jimmie Davis (the original recording artist of “You Are My Sunshine”), Andrew Migliore (aka No Love for the Middle Child), and Colson Baker (aka Machine Gun Kelly).

In an Instagram Stories post, MOD SUN candidly shares, “I took a year off to make sure I came back with something I’m really proud of. My best friend Machine Gun Kelly helped us really make sure the writing was exactly what I wanted to say and I was saying the words the exact way it sounds like to have a conversation with me. My brother @nolove and myself connected last September and made a deal with each other to make the most fulfilling music we’ve both ever made. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him and he’s my favorite producer in the game. Also about to be one of 2024 best new artists out. I’m just happy yall. We did it.”

In his own Instagram Stories post, No Love for the Middle Child adds, “Proud of you, MOD. Honored to be on this journey with you.”

Following a heartwrenching and sudden split from his former fiancée Avril Lavigne in February 2023, “Sunshine” juxtaposes the original rendition of “You Are My Sunshine,” which symbolizes undying love. The two songs parallel one another, showcasing MOD SUN’s lingering devotion to his former partner while reflecting themes of unconditional love, protection, and safety—elements of that relationship that have since burned out.

MOD SUN wears his heart on his sleeve with poignant lyrics like, “Tell me, what am I supposed to do?/When I see someone else is gettin close to you/When I get jealous cause he starts posting you/And I’m stuck here, still not over you…” and “I can smell you on a couple of my old clothes/We used to be a couple now I’m so alone…” These lines reveal the depth of his pain and longing, allowing him to be vulnerable about the love lost.
