Every song starts with a demo. Whether this means an acoustic voice memo recording or an experimental full-band track, this stage of the songwriting process is intended for fleshing out new ideas with complete vulnerability. L.S. Dunes is celebrating the spirit of demos with a stripped-down version of their song, “Old Wounds.” The release is a teaser for what’s to come in their upcoming collection, Lost Songs: Lines And Shapes.

L.S. Dunes and Circa Survive vocalist Anthony Green croons without holding any emotion back from the listener. The haunting melody plays homage to the original arrangement but without the aggressive punk rock varnish. Travis Stever’s open guitar strums do the song justice and reveal the intricate musical road map that the band took from the song’s start to finish.

“The original guitar part for ‘Old Wounds’ was conceived in the L.S. Dunes text thread,” Stever says about the process. “It was an old riff that I had never used. I stumbled on it, started working on it again, and sent it in the middle of the night. Tim was the only one still awake. Tim had a positive response and showed enthusiasm, so I kept sending the riff ideas to him, and he would give his opinion and notes.”

“The next morning, I ran to my studio space and recorded the guitar parts. At this point, we had numerous instrumental ideas, and it was up to Anthony what songs we would choose for the desert sessions. He sent back the most beautiful and haunting vocals and lyrics to the guitar ideas that would become ‘Old Wounds.’ It then became clear that that would be one of the songs we needed to record.”
