Coming off of the resounding success of their debut collection, Crying In The Shower, which dropped earlier this year, Letdown. is back with the dizzyingly introspective “Happiness Is Overrated.” Following the chorus’ poignant proclamation, “This is not another party song/Just someone barely holding on,” Letdown.’s latest masterpiece delves deep into the sacrifices and measures vocalist Blake Coddington is willing to take to shield himself from being hurt. The song, accompanied by a captivating music video, explores themes of disillusionment and the pursuit of true happiness—if it exists.

From the opening chords, “Happiness Is Overrated” sets a haunting tone, drawing listeners into the band’s soul-searching journey. As Coddington soulfully embraces the instrumentation, delivering the opening line, “I think I hate myself again,” the band flawlessly conveys the profound emotions intricately woven within the lyrics and the bittersweet melancholy that accompanies them.

The music video complements the song’s profound themes and presents a compelling narrative of the core message. With a striking storyline depicting the song’s underlying sense of isolation and longing, the video takes viewers on a gripping emotional rollercoaster, traversing from despair to self-discovery. Additionally, the release challenges the audience to contemplate their own perception of happiness.

Reflecting on the song’s meaning, Coddington shares, “The song is a battle of accepting my fate, as I’ve made it to be isolated and cut off from everyone else. In my struggle to be happy, I find that getting rid of everything that can make me happy also can kill the possibility of being hurt, and asking myself why I destroy everything in my path. Maybe happiness really is overrated.”
