Laura Jane Grace is one of Billboard Magazine’s “50 Greatest Rock Lead Singers Of All Time” for a reason. Her emotionally raw lyrics and vocal delivery encourage listeners to look beyond the surface and discover entirely new things about themselves. Her latest single, “Dysphoria Hoodie,” is no different, painting a picture of gender dysphoria and the small comforts that can cover you like a protective armor. The song is a triumphant introduction to Laura Jane Grace’s upcoming full-length record, and we can’t wait to hear more.

Through folk-infused acoustic guitar strums and Grace’s vocals at the forefront, the stripped-down arrangement is the perfect choice for a song about wearing layers. In a statement, the artist delves deeper into the metaphor behind the track. “This is a song about gender dysphoria and your favorite hooded sweatshirt,” Grace says. “Any trans person out there knows what a dysphoria hoodie is—it’s the hoodie you wear when feeling low and dysphoric, and you don’t want the world reading your gender. Hide your body shape, hide your head, disappear as much as you can. Wrap yourself up in it like a blanket anywhere you go. Make your flesh become cotton. Instant protection from the outside world. My dysphoria hoodie happens to be an Adidas hoodie, so yes, this is, in fact, really just a tribute song to my favorite Adidas hoodie.”
