grandson Gets Vulnerable In New Music Video For “Half My Heart”

Known for his self-explorative lyrics, grandson is stepping out of his comfort zone with his new music video for “Half My Heart.” Off of his new full-length, I LOVE YOU, I’M TRYING, the video showcases the artist on an endlessly-spinning merry-go-round. The setting is a symbol of the song’s themes about growing up and feeling stuck.

grandson is on a playground, battling between learning from his bad habits and opening his heart to new relationships. In the end, he gets off of the merry-go-round and is joined by a possible love interest.

“‘Half My Heart’ is about feeling stuck in love,” director Zachary Bailey shares. “We wanted to return to the child-like innocence and vulnerability of giving your heart to someone and all the frustration, bliss and embarrassment that comes with it. Once Jordan finally loosens his grip on the idea and lets go, he is able to break the spell and start the journey with his unknown love interest at the end.”

While the song has an upbeat indie-pop sensibility, grandson was grappling with his mental health. “Half My Heart,” is a journey inward, as the artist discovers himself through the highs and lows of life. Yet, he reminds us through his introspection that the journey is a marathon, not a sprint.

“It’s the most personal work I’ve done, it explores some of my deepest rooted fault lines, and covers suicidal ideation, family secrets, long distance relationships, insecurity, and ultimately the acceptance of change and letting go of a version of yourself you’ve held onto too tightly,” he writes in an Instagram post.

With this new release, grandson sheds light on mental health and the conversations we must have to weather the storms.
