Once upon a time, we were excited over the announcement of a full-length animated film about Gorillaz. The idea seemed perfect for an animated band that has had a long career. Now Netflix is breaking our hearts and canceling the project. This comes with Netflix making budget cuts for their animation department.
In an interview promoting their new album, Cracker Island, Damon Albarn told HUMO (translated by Stereogum), “They started to panic because they were making too much content and decided to cut back on their movie offerings. And, as has been classic Hollywood practice for decades, the guy we were working with has moved on to another company. From then on you have lost your guardian angel, and there seems to be a bad smell hanging on you.”
We’re disappointed, to say the least, but at least we have a new album to look forward to!
