Charming Liars are taking us deeper and deeper into their new era. Following on from last year’s full-length effort Tourniquet, they’ve been drip-feeding a new look and new feel with their music. It kicked off back in February with “Bury Me”, and it is continuing with “Black Cage”. And based on these two epics, we are in for a proper treat.
With “Black Cage”, the band delve into murky and atmospheric waters. Throbbing bass, dancefloor-filling hooks and a driving rhythm that washes over you like the ocean, it is a hypnotic experience. Throw in a vocal that is as much a powerful croon as it is a subtle pulse, and you have a song readymade for late-night car rides through the towering city streets. It’s an expansion of everything that Charming Liars have been up until this point. Paying tribute to the paths they have walked on previously.

The band agree that this new sonic territory for them, stating, “‘Black Cage’ is a dark dive for us musically and thematically. It’s written as a sort of commentary on the flaws of the modern age and the investments in blood that have aided in its creation. We feel the musical soundscapes really represent the heartbeat and dread of the machine, while the lyrics suggest we reject its predetermined routes and rewrite them.”
And here is “Bury Me”, just to get you all caught up with where we are now:
