Charlotte Sands has officially launched her independent debut album, can we start over? Inspired by the concept of embracing new beginnings, whether it’s through “restarting a relationship,” growing in your career, or other transformative moments in life, the anthemic nine-track release was surely worth the wait. From the previously released singles “blindspot,” “use me,” “pity,” and “get over it,” to the standout single “on the outside” featuring Point North, can we start over? is a declaration of confidence, strength, vulnerability, and embracing change.

Earlier this week, before the official release, Sands shared her debut record exclusively with idobi Radio listeners and broke down each track. You can listen to her track by track here

Sands also joined Gone Fishkin’s Fish to chat about the album as well as the moments leading up to the release. In the new episode, he spoke with Sands about her 2022 release, “Keep Me Up All Night,” and the moment he recognized the interpolation of one of his favorite songs, “Thunder,” by Boys Like Girls in the release. While Sands has never released a proper cover, she was able to incorporate a fellow New Englander into her song in “such a tasteful way” that made it her own.

“I wrote ‘Keep Me Up All Night’ with Danen Reed,” Sands explains. “He, at the time, was working on the Boys Like Girls album. He’s really close with Martin Johnson, and they were working on the project together. We were writing ‘Keep Me Up All Night,’ and we, as a joke, were recording vocals, and we were trying to figure out what to do for the bridge. Danen just started playing these different chords, and as a joke, I started singing ‘Thunder.’ We were laughing and thought it would be so funny and that we should record it. So we did, and I was like, ‘Send it to Martin,’ and let’s see if he listens to the song long enough that he hears that part.”

“All of a sudden, Martin’s live texting back while listening to the song. We thought it was so funny and we were, of course, going to write something else. He was saying, ‘This song is so sick, this is so cool.’ And then all of a sudden, he was like, ‘Wait, oh my god. This is so cool!’ So then we were like, ‘Wait, he doesn’t hate it? He’s not mad?’ And then automatically, we were like, ‘Shit, we should make that the bridge.’”

“It’s so funny because it started as us thinking we were being little pranksters, and then it ended up being the song. I didn’t think for one second that he would or anybody would be like, ‘Yeah, go ahead, use the song.’ He was so cool about it and so nice. Now, every time we play that song live, that’s so fun because even at shows, if people have no idea who I am, I know that the second I start singing that bridge, anybody in the audience can sing along.”
