Billie Eilish Shares Tear-Stained New Track “What Was I Made For?”

New music from Billie Eilish is always something to be excited about. But it’s even more exciting when that new music has been written for the new Barbie movie. With anticipation at a fever pitch for one of the year’s most incredible films to drop, there’s also the matter of the soundtrack too. Featuring Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj and Charli XCX alongside Billie to name a few, it’s a paradise for pop music. But when it comes to Billie’s offering, there is a much more intimate approach to things.

Her song is called “What Was I Made For?” and is a piano ballad to end all piano ballads. A softly-crooned beauty of a song, its meaning not only relates to the film’s sentiment and message but also that of life itself. Of fragility, of not knowing where you fit in this world, of not understanding why things are the way they are. They are all delivered with the vulnerability and gorgeous emotion of one of the planet’s most incredible artists.

It is as much about Billie Eilish as it is about Barbie. It is an astonishing piece of songwriting.

Billie had this to say about the track and its creation via an Instagram post:

“in january greta showed me and finneas a handful of some unfinished scenes from the film; we had nooooo idea what to expect at ALLL… we were so deeeeeply moved.. that the next day we were writing and COULDNT shut up about it lolll andddddddddd ended up writing almost the entire song that night. to be real with you this all seemed to happen in a time when i really needed it. i’m so so thankful for that.

this video makes me cryyyyy.. it means so much to me and i hope it will mean just as much to you. don’t have much to say other than that, i think it will speak for itself :’’’’) enjoy”

Billie last released music last year in the form of a two-track EP. That was called Guitar Songs is more intimate, heartfelt and incredible songwriting. Here’s “TV”:
