(Un)Covered: Can’t Take My Eyes Off You

“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”
Writers: Bob Crewe, Bob Gaudio
Original Release Date: April 1967

Often, when singers break away from the bands that made them famous to pursue solo careers, they don’t reach the same level of success. In Frankie Valli’s case, however, his decision to record a handful of solo performances led to one of the biggest hits in his life—and a song that has had a huge cultural impact.

Since it burst onto the airwaves in 1967, Valli’s ecstatic single “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” has garnered literally hundreds of covers, and for good reason: it’s a bright and happy song that begs to be reimagined in every genre. The lyrics are simple but sweet, and Valli’s smooth voice adds a touch of old-school romance.

Out of all the covers to choose from, the two I love the most are Heath Ledger’s romantic bandstand rendition in one of the best movies ever, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Muse. Recorded as a B-side for their 2002 double A-side single “Dead Star”/”In Your World”, their cover is loud and proud, featuring a belted chorus, gang vocals, and roaring guitars. Matt Bellamy’s recognizable voice is no less effective than Frankie Valli’s when it comes to bringing the swoon, in an updated version of a classic love song.
