Miles Away: LAX – SFO Day 4: Truck Stops and Trying Times

Another early morning, and a fall down two flights of stairs while trying to leave the hostel we called home for the night in West Hollywood. That was a glorious start to day four. Tabitha and I headed north toward San Francisco making excellent time. We cranked some Nelly, enjoyed a mountain range view, and repeated our daily search for coffee.

After a brief pit stop for WiFi and electrical outlets, our day took a turn for the worse. A white truck came speeding through the median and towards our poor little matchbox. It all happened in a flash, the airbags deployed and my seatbelt made my grip to the seat even tighter. Lungs filled with dust, we looked up and realized the truck was quickly disappearing, without a care in the world in regards to our condition.

We were in between cities, and hours away from the closest rental car company. Nearly five hours after the accident, we were reluctantly back on the road. A two hour drive to the venue and still shaken, we hopped in rental number two and arrived at Bottom of the Hill halfway through Beach Weather’s set. After the accident it was refreshing to be in a crowd of people we loved, singing along to our favorite songs. But our night was far from over.

We left the venue to find a group of girls who had been to a few of the other shows with us. Their windshield had been smashed and belongings strewn across the street. Tabitha and I made sure help was on the way before walking back to our own car, and commenting on how awful a car break in at this point would be. Imagine our chagrin upon arriving to a smashed passenger window in the newly acquired “hot tamale”. Our compact car had no trunk, so my backpack was tucked under the seat and covered by a jacket. My hiding place was not enough to deter a passerby, and my already broken laptop along with other miscellaneous items was stolen.

Hungry and desperate for sleep, we headed to the San Francisco airport to pick up rental number three. At this point, I wouldn’t have even given us a third, so shoutout to Fox Rent-A-Car for taking a chance on two unlucky ladies. Positive thinking and a night in a random hotel complete with surprise jacuzzi bathtub was all we needed to keep on going. Fresno could only be better.

Blur cam note: my name is blurryface and I [don’t] care what you think…
