Who: Laramie, WY’s Not My Weekend never let the small scene in their town stop them. Instead they set their sights on bigger cities (and shows), building their reputation while opening for Happy. and picking up deals with We Are Triumphant. The band dropped their debut album this month, signaling to music fans everywhere: You better keep ‘em on your radar in 2021.

What: Hear “Sip” from their first full length Honeymoon.

Why: “Sip” is a solid pop punk tune, highlighted perfectly by a piano and a thunderstorm of emotion. The light beats of the bridge are entrancing, the hook is hypnotic, and before you know it you’re swept into its atmosphere. Everything the band was feeling is laid on the table and you’ll feel it too, as you try to sing along before you even know the words.

Who: After years on the road, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever is returning home. The Melbourne band created their new album Sideways To New Italy as a beacon of hope when they’re feeling ragged on the road. The result is a collection of personal tunes that make you wish the volume could go just a little bit louder.

What: The band’s latest single, “The Only One”.

Why: Shhh… do you hear that? It’s the winds of good vibes, coming to cheer you up on this chilly Thursday morning. Okay, maybe it’s not—but “The Only One” could have fooled us. The dreamy tune has all the sunshine of the band’s Melbourne hometown. There are three guitarists in the group and their work shines through the entire track. A funky rhythm guides the song along as you tap your toes, while dreamy verses outfit you with a pair of rose colored glasses. For the whole four minute run time, your worries will melt away and the world will seem a little bit brighter… and when it stops, you can play it all over it again.

Who: To everyone who lived for Michelle Branch in the 2000s: Your new alt-pop queen is here. Sydney Sprague builds on the sounds that came before her for a vibe all her own. She’ll show off the music she’s created with the release of her debut album. maybe i will see you at the end of the world drops on 2/26 with Rude Records.

What: If you can’t wait to hear what Sydney’s been working on dig into a teaser of “object permanence”, out tomorrow 1/15.

Why: “object permanence” is a wave of nostalgia, it’s first notes alone sending you twenty years into the past. You might think you’ve heard the tune on Gilmore Girls before—but give it a few seconds. The song comes back to the future thanks to the flair Sydney leaves on every track. Her voice conducts the melody, rising and falling with sing along choruses and tension building bridges. Danielle Durack throws her voice into the mix too, and now we need to see a Sydney Sprague grrrl band. It all adds up to a catchy AF tune that you know you’re gonna play again (and again).
