You can dismiss Blink-182 as cartoons if you like. They’re certainly not going to stop you. They even call their new album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket: Say it out loud, let your inner eighth-grader savor the cadence of the phrase. It sums up Blink-182’s wiseass brat-punk ethos almost as well as their recent live album, The Mark, Tom and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back), which featured the butt-stupidest stage banter since Kiss’ Alive! They used to be irreverent punks out for cheap thrills and even cheaper laughs, but now Blink-182 are a changed band. Their untitled new record is more experimental and multidimensional than 2001’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, adding a variety of styles (electronic rock; jangly, melancholy pop; reflective alt-rock) to their foundation of bouncy beats and kinetic guitars. It’s also more lyrically developed, trading tales of adolescent relationships for more serious dilemmas of adulthood. Blink 182 is set to enter a rented house in San Diego to start work on the follow-up to Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. The still-untitled album is being produced by Jerry Finn, and the band is eyeing a summer release. Fans will be able to see Blink 182 make the record via a web camera positioned in the house and linked to the band’s web page. If music can be a great escape from the cares of the day, whatever they be, then Blink-182’s fun show on Wednesday, rescheduled from a week earlier in light of recent events, was a perfect getaway. The San Diego pop-punk trio discharged their usual output of between-song locker room comments, and their three-minute tunes, which generally address little more than the standard teen concerns (first dates, school, loneliness), were all delivered with the players’ trademark sense of humor still very much intact. When the members of U2 walked off the stage on their 1997-1998 “PopMart” tour, the final image was a heart framed by the outsized “golden” arch – a juxtaposition that perfectly encapsulated that tour’s muddy concept, as the group had strained to find a balance between earnest emotion and smirking irony. “I hope nobody finds out about my rash,” says Mark Hoppus, fresh from putting the finishing touches on Blink-182’s latest album, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, which is due in stores June 12.
