Taking Back Sunday delivered a major moment at When We Were Young Fest 2025, bringing both John Nolan and Fred Mascherino onstage to perform together. The reunion followed the band’s summer announcement that Nolan would step back from touring, with Mascherino—who played with the group from 2003 to 2007—returning to fill in for their co-headlining tour with Coheed And Cambria.

In a seven-minute video released earlier this year, the band shared that the arrangement evolved naturally after Mascherino rejoined them for their 2024 holiday shows. “It could be something where it’s not just he’s stepping in for me,” Nolan said, “but that for the first time, we’re all playing a set together.”
At When We Were Young, that vision came to life as both guitarists shared the stage, performing fan favorites from across the band’s catalog in a rare and nostalgic full-circle moment.
