Cobra Starship is officially back—and they’re crashing the party once again with their return to Warped Tour, this time hitting the stage at Long Beach.
On idobi Warped Radio, Gabe Saporta and Victoria Asher (aka Vicky-T) join Peyton Grufik to turn back time and relive the neon madness of their rise on Myspace, one purple hoodie and keytar riff at a time.
While it’s true that Saporta essentially searched female keyboardist into the Myspace search bar and stumbled on a nearly defunct Victoria Asher profile—one that she nearly shut down due to inactivity. But Cobra Starship’s Myspace legacy runs far deeper than just chance encounters.
“I don’t know how the virality works,” Saporta admits. “I think you have to understand the internet is just so different then [compared] to it is now. The only people on the internet back then were scene kids, right? And why is that? Like if you live in your shitty little town and you’re the only person that listens to this band, you’re going to go on the internet to try and find a thousand other people that like that band, all over the country, all over the world.”

He continues, “And these people congregated in chat rooms and Myspace. Myspace was a place for just people that liked this kind of music, right? Young people that couldn’t find other people locally to talk about this music. And that’s where they all got together. That’s what made Myspace.”
Asher adds, “The thing that was also so cool about it was that there was no popularity contest with putting up music. It was kind of just like you put things on there without caring how it hit because there was no more ‘how many plays, how much engagement.’”
“This was purely people really needed to talk about something,” Saporta points out. “If something was good, people would really tell their friends and share it.
Through it all, one thing is clear: Cobra Starship has brought the party back to life!
