Geek Girl Riot is celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander American (AAPIA) Heritage by highlighting stories like HOLLYWOOD, Never Have I Ever, Tigertail, The Half of It, and more. But before we get to the fun, we take some time to talk about violence against POCs and the current protests.
Police Brutality, Racism, and Violence Against People of Color
The events of the past few weeks have weighed heavy on all of us. The murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and many other black Americans at the hands of the police has sent the world into protests against police brutality and the systemic racism that fuels the current administration. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has also been a rise in violent racist attacks against Asian Americans—encouraged by the president himself. Remember: It is your constitutional right to protest. With demonstrations taking place all over the world, Sherin, Julian, and Kat are joined by illustrator & writer Alice Meichi-Li to talk about how they’re feeling right now and look into the racially-motivated violence that’s happening against people of color.

AAPIA Heritage Month might be over but our celebration continues! Sherin, Alice, Julian, and Kat talk about the recent Asian American and Pacific Islander-led releases they’ve been loving, including HOLLYWOOD, Alan Yang’s Tigertail, and The Half of It. Never Have I Ever + More Asian American Heritage Content
Our Rioters also get into Never Have I Ever and highlight some of the other content they’ve been digging lately that celebrates Asian American heritage. To close out the show, they call for more representation in media and look at the ways they missed or found representation of their own experiences growing up.
