It’s easy to say “everybody is beautiful”. It’s harder to believe it. The ladies at Geek Girl Riot run the spectrum of shape, size, color, and culture, and some of them got together to discuss the body positivity movement in the fashion and beauty industries. Special guest Joslyn Smith, Director of Policy & Government Affairs at The Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA), joins Sherin, Soma, Kat, Angie, and Renee to talk the good and bad in fashion brands, universal sizing (dear labels, please stop using voodoo to determine size), the comparison syndrome, and the mistake of equating health with body size.
The Rioters share their heartfelt and personal stories about what body acceptance and positivity means to them, and why seeing inclusion in the media is so important. Embracing who you are is a journey, and it’s an important one only you can take. We encourage you to share your stories too.
What does body acceptance mean to you? Have a story you want to share with us? Have some body positive models you want to shout out? Come talk to us on Twitter!
“The Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) is committed to building a community dedicated to helping those with binge eating disorder and associated weight stigma as well as those who research and treat the disorder.” Find out more about the non-profit here.
