State Champs frontman Derek DiScanio stopped by idobi Radio to talk all about the band’sself-titled fifth studio album. Throughout the interview, DiScanio makes it a point to talk about how the band reconnected and returned to their roots while recording this record with a slightly new approach.
State Champs always start their albums with a powerful track, and the “The Constant” off of their self-titled is no exception. “We wanted to set the tone right with this one,” DiScanio shares. “And ‘The Constant’ is a very kind of rooty, old-school, finger-pointy, bouncy pop-punk song, which we had to do.”
He continues, “We kind of wanted to get back to let’s do an opener like ‘Elevated’ almost, and that kind of sets the tone for the record. Lyrically it’s about being what we’ve been through, this rollercoaster of ups and downs, and pushes and pulls within the industry and behind-the-scenes stuff. So you know, things like management changes and record label drama, and there’s so much bullshit that happens behind the scenes that the fans don’t ever see. So we kind of peek into that and talk about that in that song and set the tone with we’ve been through some shit. But we’re about to bring it all back to square one and give you guys the best version of State Champs”

When thinking about what single from State Champs’ discography might fit into their self-titled, DiScanio explains, “A single from an old album that could be a single on this album… The first one that came to mind is the song ‘Losing Myself’ from Around The World And Back. Selfishly, it’s one of my favorites of the old material. But a song like that, that’s like poppy, jumpy, groovy, but has a little bit of edge and overall soulness of the melody, is another reoccurring theme on this album that I think would have fit good on the self-titled.”
