Singer Aaliyah's Body Flown To United States

The body of the late pop and soul singer Aaliyah was flown back to the United States Tuesday as safety experts examined the plane that crashed in the Bahamas, killing her and eight others. A private jet carrying the body of the 22-year-old singer and movie actress landed at Newark International Airport in New Jersey, and a hearse carried the casket away to an unknown location, according to sources. Several hours earlier, heartbroken fans gathered outside a Nassau funeral home to watch as a black hearse drove away with Aaliyah’s body. At Nassau International Airport, police stood guard while her… Read more »

After all, they share five dogs; Ford has the teacup Pomeranian, a miniature Maltese and a pug, and Carter has another pug and a boxer. The 20-year-old pop singer said she and the 21-year-old Carter, who dated for three years, didn’t talk at first after breaking up in October, but now they’re friends again. “We learned a lot together. We went through so much at such a young age,” Ford told The Associated Press. “We were put in front of all these people so quickly and… Read more »

Korean Song-Swap Creators Indicted

Internet song-sharing software is downloaded and enjoyed by millions of music fans and becomes the talk of the nation. Record labels complain and seek to punish the program’s creators for allegedly encouraging music piracy. So it goes for Soribada, or “Sea of Sound,” South Korea’s answer to Napster. Except instead of facing a lawsuit, the two U.S.-educated brothers who authored the file-swapping program are in deeper trouble. Yang Jung-hwan, 28, and his 32-year-old brother Yang Il-hwan were indicted Sunday on criminal charges of copyright violation. The Yang brothers, who face up to five years in jail and up to $38,500… Read more »

Eminem Turns Up On Jay-Z'S Blueprint

Roc-A-Fella Records CEO Damon Dash put just a little more of a pimp stroll than usual in his confident swagger as he walked into the penthouse of Manhattan’s Hotel Giraffe Thursday night. Dash was about to show a handful of invited guests his trump card – the new Jay-Z album, The Blueprint, which features appearances by Eminem and, apparently, Michael Jackson. “I don’t want to say we’re the backbone of hip-hop, because that may sound arrogant, but it is what it is,” Dash said before playing seven songs from the LP, which comes out September 18 and features the single… Read more »

Mariah Carey's New Album Delayed After Breakdown

As Mariah Carey recovers from a nervous breakdown, the pop singer’s Virgin Records label said Thursday it had delayed the release of her new album, the first under a lucrative new contract. Carey, 31, was released from a Connecticut hospital Tuesday, having received a two-week treatment for what her publicists described as an “emotional and physical breakdown” as a busy schedule led to bizarre public behavior. She is resting with her mother at an undisclosed location. In a statement, Virgin said Carey’s new album, “Glitter,” would be released Sept. 11, instead of Aug. 21. The album doubles as the soundtrack… Read more »

'N Sync's "Celebrity'' Fleeting As "Now'' Bow Wows No. 1

The seemingly unsinkable ‘N Sync met their match in this week’s album rankings, as the teen phenoms ceded the top spot to the latest installment of blockbuster compilation series “Now That’s What I Call Music.” Sales of ‘N Sync’s “Celebrity” (Jive) dove 75% in their sophomore session to 460,000 units, blunting the giddy optimism generated the prior week when the record bowed with sales of nearly 2 million units. Filling the void on the music charts at No. 1 was “Now 7” (Virgin), the latest in a series that has had a virtual lock on multiplatinum status since its inception.… Read more »

STP, Live Enliven Beer Bash

If last year’s inaugural Rolling Rock Town Fair was the beta edition, this year’s event, billed as Rolling Rock Town Fair 2.0, definitely was an improved version -logistically, at least. Musically, it could be argued that, while Saturday’s headliners Live and Stone Temple Pilots really delivered, they were no match for last year’s Moby and the Red Hot Chili Peppers combo. The daylong event at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds, an hour or so southeast of Pittsburgh (concert traffic notwithstanding), also featured metal-minded modern rockers Deftones, Incubus, Staind, Tantric and Oleander… and, of course, beer. The entire event, in marketing terms, is… Read more »
