While Floridian metalcore sextet Underoath were recording 2006’s Define the Great Line a little more than a year ago, the band’s drummer, Aaron Gillespie, found himself writing straight-up rock tunes, material that he realized wouldn’t fit with Underoath’s vicious style. Growing up as a Christian, Relient K lead singer Matthew Thiessen says that it’s hard for him to ignore his faith when writing lyrics. It tends to leak through, which has helped the band join their idols MXPX in the Christian pop punk genre.
