XM, Sirius Win Licenses For Radio Service


Two satellite radio companies won temporary licenses on Monday to use ground-based repeaters to expand the reach of their new digital radio services designed primarily for vehicles, despite the protests of mobile telephone carriers. XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. need to use ground repeaters to bounce signals from satellites to actual radio receivers in order to provide service to hard-to-reach areas like major downtown areas where skyscrapers block direct lines of sight. Country Icon Chet Atkins, "Mr. Guitar,'' Dead At 77


Influential guitarist Chet Atkins, who helped modernize country music in the 1960s, paving the way for the massive commercial force that it is today, died in Nashville Saturday. He was 77. In 1973 and in 1997, Atkins had fought both colon cancer and brain cancer, surviving a number of surgeries. Atkins, enjoyed a multi-faceted career: as a sought-after session musician for the likes of Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers; as a prolific recording artist in his own right; and as a veteran Nashville talent scout. ABC Kills Streams


ABC follows Clear Channel and others to discontinue web streams in the wake of the AFTRA contract controversy. Another major group of stations-ABC Radio-has indefinitely suspended the streaming of its signals on the Internet as a result of the continuing controversy over fees demanded by the new AFTRA contract. ABC had allowed talk radio stations to continue streams until today, while all other formats were taken down last week.
