Hip-Hop Plans Steps To Improve Its Image


Hip-hop, in a push to clean up its image, came out Thursday in favor of warning parents about violent and sexually explicit lyrics and said it would organize politically to help the urban poor. Rappers, music executives and black leaders at a Hip-Hop Summit in New York said they would label sexually explicit and violent music, as well as Web sites and posters that promote it. One In 20 Downloads Music, Shuns Stores – U.S. Poll


A study released Thursday showed that 5.5 percent of Americans aged 16 to 40 have not purchased a single music CD or cassette in the past year but have been actively downloading music from the Internet. The survey, conducted by Edison Media Research for the radio and music trade publication Records & Radio, was one of the first attempts to quantify the impact that Internet-based music services such as Napster have had on sales of recorded music and, more generally, to show how the Internet is changing music listening habits. If you’re sick of yourself, MTV can help you become one of your favorite music stars – at least for a little while. The cable music channel this week is launching a new show, “Becoming.” MTV will pick fans up in a limousine, give them makeovers, teach them choreography and let them recreate their favorite videos. Napster Hires New Lawyer, Signs Loudeye Deal


Moving ahead with plans for a new pay service, Napster Inc. Thursday hired a former U.S. government lawyer to oversee legal affairs and signed a deal with Loudeye Technologies Inc. to help it identify songs on its new and existing services. The developer of the popular but controversial song-swap service said Jonathan Schwartz joined Napster from the U.S. Justice Department, where he most recently served as the principal associate deputy attorney general.
