But “Weapon of Choice,” directed by Spike Jonze and featuring Christopher Walken dancing up a hotel’s walls, was shut out of the prestigious video of the year prize, which went to Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink for “Lady Marmalade.” Last year’s big winners ‘N Sync walked away with four trophies for “Pop,” including the coveted Viewer’s Choice… Read more »

Music Downloading Rises In August, Topping Napster

Free music downloading is hotter than ever, said researchers on Thursday who found more than 3 billion files were downloaded on four leading file-swapping services in August, topping Napster at its peak. Several peer-to-peer services, which enable users to trade music, video and other files over the Web, have sprung up recently to fill the void left by song-swap service Napster, which has seen activity die due to music industry lawsuits. “Despite the millions of dollars spent trying to kill off pirate networks, the popularity of peer-to-peer file-sharing continues to grow,” said Matt Bailey, the Webnoize analyst who led the… Read more »

Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx Strut Their Stuff At VMA Rehearsals

It’s two days until ground zero, when artists, a few lucky fans and music biz bigwigs will descend on the Metropolitan Opera House in New York for the 18th annual MTV Video Music Awards. While the night of the show is traditionally characterized by glitz and glamour, the feeling in the air Tuesday, the first day of rehearsals, more closely resembled the frenzied first day of a high school stage production than the controlled chaos the VMAs have come to represent. The sweeping stage flaunted its massive video screen and raised circular podium, though all its other accoutrements remained under… Read more »

Erykah Badu Mistakenly Receives Jill Scott's Soul Train Award

Good thing Erykah Badu wasn’t around to pick up her Album of the Year trophy at Tuesday night’s Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards – she’d have to mail it to Jill Scott. Show organizers said Thursday (August 30) that Badu’s Mama’s Gun was erroneously announced as Soul/R&B Album of the Year during the taping of the ceremony at Santa Monica (California) Civic Auditorium, and the award actually belongs to Scott for Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol. 1. Katie Jones, supervising producer at Don Cornelius Productions, said the winner was “read incorrectly” during the award’s presentation. She… Read more »
