Geri Halliwell Has To Wait For World Cup

For British soldiers in the Oman desert, it’s no contest – soccer beats pop. Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell was to give a morale-boosting concert to 10,000 troops in Oman for a giant military exercise next month. Then organisers realized that the concert clashed with England’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Greece on October 6. Now a giant television screen is being erected at their Camp South base. “The show is to be delayed two hours so the lads can watch the football,” a defence spokesman said on Thursday.

Boy Band Five Split After Four Years

The boy band Five split up on Thursday after four years together that gave them three number one hits. After weeks of speculation about their possible breakup, the band said the decision to disband had come “after lengthy discussions.” The band said that as their profile had grown, they could no longer do justice to their fans or to each other. Five released their third album – “Kingsize” – last month. They topped the singles chart in August with “Let’s Dance.” Five star J has said the pressures of fame drove him to anorexia, insomnia and mental breakdown. He claimed… Read more »

Timbaland Says He And Dr. Dre Might Do Album Together

When you’re one of the game’s most sought-after producers, working with somebody of your choice is usually not that difficult. Unless, of course, it’s another heavily sought-after producer you’re looking to work with. In August, Timbaland said he was hoping he and Dr. Dre could juggle their hectic schedules long enough to work on a major collaboration. “I want to do a Dr. Dre/Timbaland album,” he said. “We’ve been talking about that. We’re trying to do something real crazy.” On Thursday, Tim said it looks like that project is becoming more of a reality. “[We’ve] been talking about doing an… Read more »

Sex Pistols Collection Goes Under The Hammer

British punk legend Johnny Rotten’s famous “Anarchy” shirt sold at auction for 4,000 pounds ($5,860) Thursday. Rotten wore the stained and ripped shirt bearing the slogans “No Future” and “Antichrist, anarchy” on stage during the Sex Pistols’ infamous 1970s shows. It was sold to an unnamed telephone bidder at a west London sale held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the “Punk Special” concerts that helped launch the alternative music scene. “I had good feedback from the Sex Pistols-related pieces, but the results were much better than I expected,” said Stephen Maycock of British auction house Sothebys. Johnny Rotten’s shirt… Read more »

Key Politicians In Harmony Over Net Music Bill

Key Capitol Hill politicos on Wednesday sent a letter urging colleagues to reject legislation that would force recording labels to offer the same price and terms when cutting licensing deals with Internet ventures. The measure in question was introduced this summer by Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va.), who’s concerned that the major labels will control the flow of songs on the Internet by giving special permission to those online services they back. But some of Boucher’s colleagues on the House Internet Subcommittee say it’s far too early in the game to regulate the Internet. Those signing the letter opposing Boucher’s bill… Read more »

Where To Get Information, Where You Can Help

Those who are old enough are also giving blood and volunteering with the Red Cross and other charities. A rare revision by music tracking firm SoundScan has catapulted Los Angeles hard rock band System of a Down to No. 1 on the U.S. pop album charts, the group’s publicist said Sunday. The group’s second album, “Toxicity,” had originally debuted at No. 2 with sales of 170,000 units when data for the week ended Sept. 9 were issued Wednesday morning. R&B singer Alicia Keys’ “Songs In A Minor” was No. 1 with 192,000 units. But SoundScan later in the day adjusted the System of a Down data by adding 50,000 units of a limited-edition enhanced CD of “Toxicity,” which… Read more »
