After lending her rich voice to all four Chemical Brothers studio albums, Beth Orton is finally getting her favors returned. Daybreaker, the techno-folkie’s third full-length album, due July 30, features beats from Brothers Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons on the title track. Other guests on the record include alt-country alchemist Ryan Adams harmonizing on “Concrete Sky” and composing on “OK,” veteran Emmylou Harris contributing vocals to the ballad “God Song,” and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr playing on several tracks. “Paris Train,” “Ted’s Waltz,” “Mt. R&B singer-songwriter Joe has responded to embattled R&B superstar R. Kelly’s recent negative comments. Adema’s frontman, Marky Chavez, is of course the half-brother of Korn’s Jonathan Davis. Audiovent’s blood runs even thicker: singer Jason Boyd and guitarist Ben Einziger are the brothers of Incubus vocalist Brandon Boyd and guitarist Mike Einziger. According to their folklore, electronic rap act Anti-Pop Consortium came together to “disturb the equilibrium.” With left-of-center releases like 2000’s Tragic Epilogue and last year’s Shopping Carts Crashing, lyricists Priest, Beans and M. Sayyid and DJ E. Blaize have gotten off to a pretty good start. But they’re nowhere near done. Marilyn Manson and the mother of a woman who died in a car crash following a party at his home last April are beginning to face off, as Manson is now considering a countersuit to the wrongful death suit she filed last week. Maria St. John accuses Manson (born Brian Warner) of providing her daughter, Jennifer Syme, with cocaine and instructing her to drive while under the influence. Manson addressed the lawsuit last week in a statement expressing sorrow for Syme’s death while claiming she had been given a designated driver. Third Eye Blind are making headway on their third album and eyeing a summer release, despite being interrupted in the studio by a few high-profile guests. In-your-face party starter Andrew W.K. showed up and added backing vocals to the song “F-ked up Kid,” while Kimya Dawson of lo-fi indie band the Moldy Peaches donated her voice to “Self Righteous.” The most famous visitor to stop by the San Francisco studio, however, did not collaborate. April fools were on the loose at the kick-off date of the Sum Like It Hot Tour Monday night at the Electric Factory. At the head of the parade was Deryck Whibley, who led his band, Sum41, in an hour’s worth of snotty punk rock, heavy metal reverence and irreverent shtick. Blink-182 side project Boxcar Racer played their debut show Monday night, exhausting their supply of songs as well as their frontman, singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge. Halfway through the band’s 40-minute set at the Mira Mesa Epicentre, a sweat-drenched DeLonge moaned, “F-, I’m tired. I’m out of shape.” Though more likely he just wasn’t used to being the sole focus of attention.
