Motley Crue Reunion Adds Toy Story

Los Angeles – Motley Crue action figure sets will be up for grabs in a promotion for the band’s reunion tour this spring. Global Spectrum and McFarlane Toys are teaming to offer concertgoers at five venues the chance to win a set along with a pair of concert tickets. The promotion is part of Global Spectrum’s effort to explore more creative marketing tools, while McFarlane Toys is seeking to expand its customer base. “This is a way to draw attention to our venues,” Global Spectrum COO John Page says. “Traditional forms of advertisement aren’t having the same impact they used… Read more »

The Black Crowes Go On Un-Hiatus

The Black Crowes will flock together once more, hitting a New York stage for a five-night run. The stoner Southern-rock band have been on “hiatus” since January 2002 and haven’t played a show together since the previous October – and while the band, media and fans have all submitted to the word “hiatus,” everybody knows the Crowes were really broken up, so this little get-together is a pretty big deal. Currently the plan is to take these few shows on and see how it all goes – if the Robinson brothers pull an Oasis and spend the whole time bickering… Read more »

'Battle For Ozzfest' Winners Have A Lot Of Shirtless Fans

Seven months ago, A Dozen Furies were just another band you would catch playing in a dive bar and, looking up only briefly from your drink, note to yourself, “Interesting name.” Now, after besting North Carolina’s Cynder in the finals of MTV’s “Battle for Ozzfest” – scoring $60,000, a contract with Sanctuary Records and a slot on next year’s Ozzfest second stage in the process – they’ve become the metal community’s biggest overnight success story. “We’re a very new band. We only have one album. We’ve only been around for a year,” ADF guitarist Marc Serrano laughed. “When we won… Read more »

Teen TV Dramas Help Emerging Music Stars

New York – When Casey Stratton was a struggling singer-songwriter a few years ago, he had idealistic notions about artistic integrity. High on his list of what would jeopardize it: licensing his music to television. “When I was younger, I used to be really weird about stuff like that, like, ‘I will not cheapen my work by putting it on TELEVISION!’” he recalls with a chuckle. That was before the producers of the teen-oriented drama “Tarzan” called and asked to use the bittersweet ballad “Hollow,” from his debut album, on the WB show. Stratton gave the go-ahead, and while the… Read more »

Sixth Oasis Album Due in May

New York – Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher revealed Friday his band’s sixth studio set will be released internationally May 16, almost three years after its previous set, “Heathen Chemistry.” In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Gallagher said the Epic album is finished and has a title, but he declined to unveil it. The album will feature 12 songs credited to all four current members – Noel, singer Liam Gallagher, bassist Andy Bell and guitarist Gem Archer. In the past, Noel Gallagher has served as the band’s primary songwriter. “It’s my favorite one of the last four,” he said of… Read more »

Bright Eyes Greets New Year with Two Albums

Los Angeles – Bright Eyes principal Conor Oberst delivered a finished album to his label last February with an eye on a summer release, but then he had other ideas. He went back into the studio and recorded enough songs for a second set. Unwilling to scrap or combine any of the material, Oberst told his label, Omaha, Neb.-based Saddle Creek Records, that he wanted to release two separate albums – on the same day. “We felt like, ‘Why not kill two birds with one stone and put it all out there?”‘ Oberst says. On Jan. 25, Saddle Creek will… Read more »

The Vandals Moshes in the New Year in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq – While Saddam Hussein spent a second New Year’s Eve in a jail cell, a Southern California rock band known for such albums as “Hitler Bad, Vandals Good” and “Look What I Almost Stepped In” played in the heart of his former empire. The 3rd Brigade of the Army’s 1st Cavalry Division got a one-hour show by punk perennials The Vandals during a modest Friday night party in the Green Zone. The show was one of the few entertainments provided for U.S. troops in Iraq on New Year’s Eve, a day marked chiefly by a relative lull in… Read more »

Linkin Park Donates $100,000 to Tsunami Relief

New York – With memories of a successful summer tour in Southeast Asia still fresh in their minds, the members of Linkin Park are spearheading an effort to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami that have devastated the region. The Los Angeles-based rock act has set up an organization called Music for Relief (http://www.musicforrelief.org) with an initial donation of $100,000. It will directly support American Red Cross programs. “We are fortunate to be in a position to help, but this needs to be a broader effort,” said guitarist Brad Delson. “If one of our fans can donate $10, then… Read more »

Strike.Fire.Fall Wins Takeover Recods' "Sign My Band" Contest

It seems only fitting that after six months, 7,000 bands and more than 100,000 votes, the winner of the Takeover Records “Sign My Band” contest would be determined by mere percentage points. And so on Christmas Eve, when the Internet polls closed and Pennsylvania’s Strike Fire Fall defeated the New York band Silhouette by the slimmest of margins – 52 percent to 48 percent – no one was really surprised. “People don’t realize how many bands there are out there, how many kids there are in garages out there. And we’d like to think that this contest communicated to those… Read more »

Prince, Madonna Tours Top Draws in Difficult Year

Los Angeles – In a dismal year for the touring industry, with ticket prices soaring and seats going unsold, music fans in North America partied like it was 1989 as Prince and Madonna topped the concert box office. According to freshly tabulated estimates provided by concert trade publication Pollstar, Prince sold $87.4 million in tickets in 2004, while Madonna earned $79.5 million. Prince also worked a bit harder for his payday, playing 96 shows, compared with 39 for Madonna. Canadian pop singer Celine Dion actually topped Madonna by about $900,000, but her haul came exclusively from 154 dates performed at… Read more »
