Technology Helps Singers Hit the Right Note

New York – The Nov. 8 broadcast of NPR’s “Morning Edition” featured two of the recording industry’s top engineer/producers and one controversial piece of technology. New York-based Pat Dillett (David Byrne, Mary J. Blige, They Might Be Giants) and Los Angeles-based Ed Cherney (the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt) were featured on the broadcast, which is part of a “Morning Edition” series on science and art. The subject: pitch-correcting software, particularly Auto-Tune, made by Antares Audio Technologies. Introduced in 1997, Auto-Tune was created by Dr. Andy Hildebrand. The research that led to its creation was far from the music… Read more »

Velvet Revolver's Forgettable Rock Experience – Review

After witnessing this incredibly uneventful performance by “super group” Velvet Revolver, it’s safe to surmise that they’re getting by on history alone. Like many bands before them, they feed off of what their individual names used to mean and are entirely undeserving of the glory bestowed upon them. Now, before you start firing off hate emails, read on. Given the wealth of talent comprising Velvet Revolver and the obvious success of debut album Contraband, one cannot deny that this quintet is capable of writing a few solid tunes. The problem is that, aside from purely ego centric reasons, they’re just… Read more »

Fallon has a rich rock history – he’s been on tour with Led Zeppelin, his Death Disco club nights attract the brightest of stars, he was U2’s DJ on the ZooTV tour and he’s perhaps the world’s ultimate authority on the world’s self-proclaimed biggest band. And although an international fan conference is something that few bands can boast, Fallon says this… Read more »

Bad Religion Keep The Punk Alive – Review

Prancing around in flattened, jet-black hair and with eyeliner so thick that Keith Richards would cringe, it’s no wonder that screamo mongers From First To Last (or From Worst To Ass as some were calling them) weren’t exactly hitting it off with the aging skater punks that comprise most of Bad Religion ‘s fanbase. Working through a quick half-hour set of typical yet passionate suburban youth anthems laid down over recycled Grade riffs, they were… openers. To their credit, the band worked hard at winning over the less than half-full crowd and eventually did rouse a portion of us into… Read more »

Good Charlotte, Sum 41 – Concert Review

Los Angeles – Saturday night’s double shot of pop-punk bands Good Charlotte and Sum 41 at the Universal Amphitheater may have been kids’ stuff, but there were plenty of ’em there for it. Taking the closing spot, Good Charlotte was clearly the bigger draw. Screams from the teen and pre-teen girls told the story. The Florida band – especially frontman Joel Madden and his twin brother, singer-guitarist Benji – are the tattooed rock boys you can bring home to mom. There were plenty of moms present, too, with 12-, 13- and 14-year-old daughters in tow. A stage decorated with tombstones,… Read more »
