U2 Was Top Concert Money Earner


The rock band U2 had the second biggest tour ever during a year in which concert industry business was off but ticket prices continued to rise, an industry trade publication said Thursday. The top 100 concert tours sold 34.4 million tickets in 2001, down about 7 percent from 37.1 million the year before, according to an analysis by Pollstar magazine. When it came to the year-end concert-grossing chart, there was no way U2 were gonna get left behind. The band’s Elevation Tour ranked as the top money- maker of 2001, bringing in $143 million, according to a report by Amusement Business. Miami Hurricanes Motivated by Rap Group


Miami-based rap group, No Good, who have just signed a recording contract with Ted Field’s ARTISTdirect Records, have found themselves not only in the recording studio making their debut album, but in the Miami Hurricane’s locker room acting as “championship inspiration.” No Good’s song, “Ballin’ Boy,” has been adopted by the Miami Hurricanes as the team’s “fight song,” and has been played in the locker room to get the players psyched up before a game. Dick Clark's Suit Says Grammys Kept Jackson From AMAs


Dick Clark says Michael Jackson would be on the American Music Awards, but Michael Greene won’t let him. The TV personality/producer filed a $10 million lawsuit on Wednesday (December 19) against Greene, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, claiming that Greene’s Grammy booking policy prevents top artists from appearing on Clark’s American Music Awards. Sugarhill Gang Wins $3 Million In Snapple/Turner Lawsuit


Hip-hop pioneers the Sugarhill Gang were awarded $3 million in damages last week in a suit brought against Snapple Beverage Corporation and Turner Broadcasting System over the wrongful use of their images and voices in a television ad that aired in 1998. The group-which comprises Big Bang Hank, Wonder Mike, and Master Gee-filed suit in New York City on January 19, 1999, after a commercial featuring them performing “Rapper’s Delight ” aired on TV as a promotion for the Goodwill Games, which Snapple sponsored. Music Firms, Broadcasters Settle on Web Royalties


Music and broadcasting companies told the U.S. government on Friday that they have tentatively settled on royalty rates that radio stations should pay when they stream their broadcasts over the Internet. In a filing with the U.S. Copyright Office, attorneys for recording companies, performing-rights groups and radio stations said they had reached a tentative settlement on what those rates should be, but did not offer any specifics.
