Vans, Pennywise Singer Form Record Label

Footwear company Vans Inc. is making one more giant leap into the music business, teaming up with Pennywise punk rocker Jim Lindberg to form Vans Records, a label that will mine the lucrative skateboard, snowboard and surf culture. The Santa Fe Springs, Calif.-based firm is no stranger to the music world, having sponsored the Warped Tour for the past six years. The road show drew more than 450,000 fans in 2001, and has helped Vans capitalize on the synergy between music and the seven “core sports” for which it makes footwear and apparel: skate-, surf-, wake- and snowboarding, as well… Read more »

Groups Appeal Online Royalties Proposal

Radio stations, Webcasters and record labels are appealing an arbitration panel’s proposed royalties for online radio services, arguing over rates that some say would kill most free Web broadcasts. At issue are fees that online radio services would have to pay to artists and record companies for each song played. The fee is $1.40 per thousand listeners for Internet-only stations, and 70 cents per thousand listeners for over-the-air stations that simultaneously broadcast online. Webcasters said the fees would consume most if not all of their dwindling advertising income. David Landis, founder of the Los Angeles-based station Ultimate80s, said his royalties… Read more »

House Rep's Rap: Unshackle the CD

Music CDs equipped with copy protection will, if Rick Boucher gets his wish, soon be as obsolete as eight-track cassettes. The feisty Democratic congressman from Virginia says he plans to introduce legislation banning, or at least regulating, compact discs outfitted with anti-copying technology. Few discs sold in America currently feature the controversial scheme – but the recording industry expects that as worries over digital piracy grow, the technique will become widespread. “Suffice to say, there probably will be a legislative response to ensure that consumer rights will be protected,” Boucher said in an interview. Boucher’s complaints are twofold: Americans may… Read more »

Incubus To Send 'Warning' To Fans

As Incubus rev up to hit the road for the Honda Civic tour, the band has a warning for its fans – literally. “Warning” will be the next single from the group’s latest record, Morning View, and Incubus will shoot a video for the tune next week during their Australian tour. “It’s probably going to follow relatively closely to the content of the song, which is basically about a moment in somebody’s life where they realize they’ve been wasting their time,” singer Brandon Boyd said. “And they realize that right when it’s too late. So, almost in a West Side… Read more »

Dido Remix Earns Grammy Thanks To Eminem's 'Stan'

A remix of Dido’s most popular song, “Thank You,” by production duo Deep Dish was among the Grammy winners announced Wednesday (February 27). The new version won in the category of best remixed recording, non-classical; besting new takes on songs by Depeche Mode, Bob Marley, Sunshine Anderson, and Samantha Mumba. However, Deep Dish’s Ali Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi say that the strength of the new version was based not on the chorus of “Thank You” but on the verse that Eminem sampled in his own hugely successful “Stan.” Shirazinia explained, “We actually didn’t use the main chorus of the original… Read more »

Music Labels, Others Band Together Against Artists

As a pop star protest against “indentured servitude” by penny pinching record companies grew to near-deafening decibel levels on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s Grammy Awards, the music industry roared back. Led by Don Henley and Sheryl Crow, the Recording Artists Coalition has been demanding changes to a California law that ties musicians longer to contracts than in other industries. Their efforts reached a crescendo Tuesday night with four Los Angeles protest concerts featuring such stars as the Eagles, Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks, Crow, No Doubt, The Offspring, The Dixie Chicks, Trisha Yearwood, Beck, and Eddie Vedder. But music labels, production… Read more »
