Bjork's Pit, Beck's Set Among Few Surprises At Risk-Free Coachella – Review

To the left, a full moon illuminated a row of palm trees swaying in a mellow breeze as the Beta Band played their melodic pop. To the right, a red sun set over a gorgeous mountain range as Siouxsie and the Banshees wrapped up their first festival performance in more than seven years. Ahead, DJ Z-Trip captivated a titanic tent overflowing with dancers by marrying Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and Rage Against the Machine’s “Testify.” It was a stereophonic moment of musical bliss. It was Coachella in a nutshell. The third annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival took over… Read more »

Incubus Sell Their Souls While Giving Away Cars

Should Incubus fans be wary of the band’s current corporate-sponsored tour? If they listen to guitarist Mike Einziger, maybe. “We signed our souls to the devil,” the guitarist said at the band’s Inglewood, California, stop on the Honda Civic Tour. Of course, Einziger likes to joke around. Actually, Incubus, who have experienced an unusually organic rise to rock’s upper echelon, are touring behind sponsorship dollars to benefit their fans. “We are coming into really big rooms now, so what happens is the ticket prices kind of skyrocketed,” singer Brandon Boyd explained. “We were able to keep our ticket prices low,… Read more »

Swedish Punks the Hives Set to Hit America

Swedish punk export The Hives, who have stormed the British singles chart this year, are spreading their infectious thrashy sound to the United States, their label, Burningheart Records, said Friday. Along with retro-punk contemporaries The Strokes and the White Stripes, the Swedish rebels have swept onto the British alternative scene this spring with their apoplectic stage show and shiny white dancing shoes. “An offer came from Warner Brothers and Sire, which we’ve accepted,” Mudda of Burningheart told Reuters. “It’s a distribution, promotion and marketing agreement and they’ll start touring the States in May.” The Hives emerged from the small industrial… Read more »

Korn's Jonathan Davis On New Video: 'This Is What Kids Are Taught'

They’ve delved into disturbing subject matter many times before, but with their new video for “Here to Stay,” Korn make their most direct and pointed commentary on sex and violence to date. The clip, which views like a graphic channel-surfing journey between CNN and the Discovery Channel, depicts a boy in front of a television broadcasting rapid-fire images, including a mob tipping over a car, fires, car collisions, open-heart surgery, animals mating and crocodiles attacking prey. Throughout, the band is depicted in black-and-white against a wall of TV static. In the end, the boy touches the TV screen and disappears… Read more »

Detroit Officials Sue Dr. Dre Over Up In Smoke Tour DVD

Dr. Dre and others affiliated with a DVD recorded during 2000’s Up in Smoke Tour were hit with an invasion of privacy lawsuit Wednesday from several existing and former Detroit city officials who claim they were secretly filmed. Greg Bowens, former press secretary for former Mayor Dennis Archer, Detroit Recreation Department official Phillip Talbert and three Detroit Police officers allege that hidden cameras illegally captured a private conversation backstage at Joe Louis Arena about an explicit video the officials banned from Detroit and nearby Auburn Hills shows. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, names several defendants, including Dre; Magic… Read more »

Dirty 'Deeds': Adam Sandler, David Bowie Record Duet

Perhaps David Bowie is taking this “collaborate with the unexpected” thing a bit too far. Dave Grohl (a rock and roll purist) and Moby (remember Outside?) at least make some sense, but Adam Sandler? That’s right, Ziggy and Happy have joined forces for an updated version of the Bowie classic “Space Oddity.” The song will appear on the soundtrack to “Mr. Deeds,” a remake of Frank Capra’s 1936 film “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town” starring Sandler and Winona Ryder and due in the theaters June 28, according to an RCA Records spokesperson for the project. Aside from new material by… Read more »
