RIAA Song-Swap Subpoenas Spur Senate Inquiry

The decision by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to seek out individuals who illegally trade music on peer-to-peer networks sparked a congressional inquiry Thursday. Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., asked the recording industry trade group to turn over copies of the subpoenas it issued to Internet providers under the controversial Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Coleman said he feared that the RIAA was being too heavy-handed in its pursuit of Internet music pirates. Coleman chairs the Senate’s permanent subcommittee on investigations. “The industry seems to have adopted a ‘shotgun’ approach that could potentially cause injury and harm to innocent people… Read more »

BC, MIT decline to name students in music-use case

Boston College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, citing concerns about student privacy, moved yesterday to quash subpoenas issued by the recording industry to discover the identities of students the industry says are illegally distributing copyrighted music. The moves represent one of the first major obstacles for the recording industry in its campaign against ordinary computer users who share copyrighted music. Jonathan Lamy, a spokesman for the Recording Industry Association of America, said he was disappointed and vowed legal action to obtain the information. “These universities have chosen to litigate this in an attempt to deny copyright holders the right… Read more »

Three months after four fans sued Creed alleging that Scott Stapp was so wasted he couldn’t perform at a December show in Chicago, the band’s singer has responded and denied the allegations. In fact, Stapp told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday that, quite to the contrary, he was offering an over-the-top, dramatic gesture meant to convey the difficulties he was facing in his personal life at the time. In a pair of lengthy voice mails the singer left with the paper, Stapp said that what fans mistook for him passing out onstage during the song “Who’s Got My Back” was… Read more »

Wakefield Are Dissed By Avril, Fake Feuding With Good Charlotte

On the opening track their debut album Wakefield cheekily declare “We’re in it for the money, all the groupie honeys/We wanted to be famous… we sold out.” Which leads one to ponder: are the guys admitting that they’ve sold their souls for rock ‘n roll, or is there more to the story? “We get so tired of hearing that we’ve sold out,” complains guitarist JD Tennyson. Lounging in the Gold Club at Toronto’s Kool Haus prior to a recent show, Tennyson takes exception to the term “sell-out.” “All of our favourite bands are being called sellouts,” he says. “Kids these… Read more »
