When Prince, ZZ Top and Jackson Browne are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, they won’t have to look far to see contemporary stars their music influenced. Outkast, Kid Rock, Alicia Keys and Dave Matthews are among those who’ll pay tribute to their musical mentors by inducting this year’s class, organizers announced Thursday (February 19). Hot on the heels of his song of the year Grammy win earlier this month, singer/songwriter Richard Marx has signed with EMI/Manhattan Records. Marx picked up the Grammy for “Dance With My Father,” which he co-wrote with the tune’s singer, Luther Vandross. Marx, famed for late ’80s hits such as “Hold on to the Nights” and “Right Here Waiting,” is putting the finishing touches on an album slated for a summer release. Sometimes your big break comes easier than you imagined it would. Just ask the members of Finger Eleven. After six years, the Canadian quintet is finally getting its just desserts with “One Thing,” the second single from the band’s self-titled third album. Even when adopting the most drastic measures, record labels seem helpless to prevent albums from surfacing online before their release dates. So now one label is taking the “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” approach. On Feb. 24, Universal Music Enterprises (UME) will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the British Invasion with a multi-disc set on the Hip-O label. Fresh from the November release of his self-titled album, Kid Rock is preparing for an arena tour in 2004. The trek will begin with a Jan. 22-23 stand in Saginaw, Mich.; 11 dates have been confirmed so far, through Feb. 14 in Raleigh.
