Timberlake Rocks; Chicks, Chilis Clean Up

LOS ANGELES – In the weeks leading up to the 49th Grammy Awards, many miles of verbiage were unspooled by slick-suited TV pundits and somewhat bitter music journalists to dissect, predict and pick apart music’s biggest night. But as the awards themselves actually unfolded, live from the Staples Center, it was the moments in which very little – if anything at all – was said that carried the most weight. Whether it was the Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines simply – and somewhat fittingly – quoting “The Simpsons” in a kiss-off to the group’s many critics; Chris Brown’s footstep-perfect rendition of… Read more »

Grammy Moments You Didn't See

Word on the street was that Justin Timberlake was sick, but MTV News found out another one of the night’s big performers was also under the weather. So who used to perform Lionel Richie songs at talent contests, and what exactly did Christina Aguilera say about private parts? Check out what we discovered by poking around backstage where the cameras didn’t go at the Grammys: · The night before the big show , Justin Timberlake was feeling chatty during Grammy rehearsals and sat down at the piano to treat everyone in the room to an impromptu, slowed-down rendition of “Di–… Read more »

Bayside Show Strength on 'The Walking Wounded'

The members of Bayside were asleep in their van on Halloween morning 2005 when the vehicle hit a patch of ice near Cheyenne, Wyoming, and skidded out of control. The driver tried to correct his steering but was unable to keep the van from rolling. “I remember when the crash first started,” singer Anthony Raneri recalled. “I had no idea what was going on. I was jolted, and then I hit my head and passed out. And I woke up after the van fell.” While Raneri and guitarist Jack O’Shea escaped with scrapes and bruises, drummer John Holohan was thrown… Read more »

Who Will Win Best New Artist At The Grammys?

It’s no secret – particularly to various employees at Gambleversity.com, MyBookie.org and/or BetOnAnythingThatMoves.net – that we here at MTV News enjoy the occasional foray into the exhilarating world of wagering. Of course, the key word here is occasional. But with Sunday’s Grammy Awards on the horizon, we convened the MTV News Bet-ological Braintrust – which is really nothing more than a couple of writers and “Hammerin’ ” Hank Goldberg on speakerphone – and determined just which of the Grammy’s 108 categories are most ripe for some sweet speculation. While there are plenty of intriguing possibilities – the battle between Eddie… Read more »

Korn Goes Prog?

When Jonathan Davis refers to having the terrible twos behind him, it’s not a parenting reference. (His son, Pirate, will actually turn 2 in March.) “We always say that, musically, our 20s are the terrible twos,” the Korn singer explained. “When you are 20 you do the stupidest stuff to your body, you’re close-minded, you’re like a 2-year-old – just grown up and can drink. Once we hit 30, we started really playing the stuff that opened our minds up.” It’s with that open mind that the 36-year-old Davis was able to envision his metal band playing a 14-song acoustic… Read more »

Tegan & Sara Going Gritty on New Album

Rock duo Tegan & Sara are about a third of the way through work on its next album, which is being produced by Death Cab For Cutie guitarist Chris Walla and recorded at his new studio in Portland, Ore. The as-yet-untitled set is expected later this year via Sanctuary. “When they asked me to do this, it was last March or April,” Walla tells Billboard.com. “A long time ago now. I got the demos pretty shortly thereafter, and those were my favorite record of 2006. It’s kind of crazy revisiting all the songs after living with the demos for so… Read more »

Nirvana At SXSW? Police At Bonnaroo? Behind The Bogus Festival Lineups

Are the re-formed Smashing Pumpkins set to rock Lollapalooza? Will the long-dormant Police return at Bonnaroo? How about a reunited Nirvana taking the stage at South by Southwest, only with Ben Kweller playing guitar and singing Kurt’s vocals? All three sound too good to be true, little more than the pipe dreams of manic music buffs with way too much free time. But incredibly, they’re all “100 percent confirmed” by sources with intimate knowledge about such things. But don’t go crazy just yet. It’s entirely possible that absolutely none of the above information is true. After all, we’re smack-dab in… Read more »

Pete Wentz On Brawl: 'I'm Not Gonna Let My Friends Fight Alone'

One week after he leapt into the crowd and began wailing on a security guard at the Sunshine Theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz is still a little bit sore, a little bit embarrassed and – in what might be a first – a little bit wary of talking about the incident. But that isn’t stopping his bandmates from giving their accounts of the punch-up, which occurred while FOB was playing the final song of their set during last weekend’s gig at the Sunshine . “I was standing on a riser, stage left, and I… Read more »

Behind The Scenes w/ Fall Out Boy

The quartet’s comfort in La-La Land has nothing to do with the Hollywood parties they’ve been frequenting and everything to do with the vibe of their long-awaited new album, ‘Infinity on High.’ Though ‘Infinity’ was born in the San Fernando Valley suburb just a few exits from Hollywood off the 101 freeway (“We’re a Burbank type of band,” bassist Pete Wentz says), the unique characteristic of Tinseltown was an unavoidable subject matter for the new album. “This is one of the best places to observe people,” he says. “And the interesting part about it is that Hollywood’s not actually, like,… Read more »

Brown's 5-year-old son left out of will

The 5-year-old child of James Brown and his partner, Tomi Rae Hynie, is not included in the will read Thursday to six of the entertainer’s children, attorneys for the late singer say. While the will provides for six children, Hynie’s son, James Jr., is not one of those listed in the document, attorney Strom Thurmond Jr. told The will was read Thursday in Aiken but has not been filed in probate court, said Buddy Dallas, another Brown attorney. Brown died Christmas morning at age 73. The gates to his home were locked soon after his death, Dallas said, until attorneys… Read more »
