Nickelback’s former management company, Amar Management, filed a breach of contract suit against the band in the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Canada. The suit, filed on January 25, contends that Nickelback wrongfully terminated the contract and has failed to pay the management company commissions, disbursements, and various other fees as a result of services rendered. The band allegedly signed a contract with Amar Management in 1996 and worked with the company through two independent albums and its first Roadrunner Records release, The State. Versatile soul icon Rufus Thomas, a pioneering radio DJ and a singer/songwriter famed for the R&B standard “Walking The Dog,” has died in Memphis at age 84, his family said Sunday. Over a 70-year career, which took off in a segregated minstrel show, Thomas was a key player in the rise of rock ‘n’ roll and soul. He recorded for the two greatest record labels to come out of Memphis, Sun and Stax, and performed into his 80s. For certain punks, there was no Bad Religion from 1996 through 2001. During that dark period, co-songwriter Brett Gurewitz split the seminal act he co-created with his pals in high school. Bassist Jason Newsted toured, recorded and partied with Metallica 24-7 for some 13 years. After quitting the band in February, at least partly because of a ban on side projects, he suddenly found the flexibility to work on multiple projects with different artists. American songwriters and music publishers have reached preliminary agreement with the on-line file sharing service Napster to settle the class-action lawsuit currently pending in federal court in California. The agreement includes terms under which the songwriters and music publishers will license their music to Napster’s new membership-based service. The 18th annual MTV Video Music Awards delivered its second largest audience on Thursday, and ranked as the most-watched program on cable since January. According to Nielsen Media Research, Thursday’s show averaged 10.76 million viewers, up 9% from last year but down 10% from the record-setting pace of 1999 (11.94 million). MTV was Thursday’s most-watched primetime network, averaging about 1 million viewers more than runner-up ABC (9.80m). The twin-engine plane that crashed in the Bahamas and killed rising R&B star Aaliyah together with eight other people may have been overloaded by as much as 700 pounds, Bahamian police sources said Wednesday.
