Papa Roach Provide The Rock For Rappers Black Eyed Peas

Just because the next Papa Roach album will be devoid of rapping doesn’t mean the band doesn’t have a little bit of hip-hop left in its blackened heart – which might explain why the group has booked studio time to work on a song with innovative rappers Black Eyed Peas. The track will appear on the next Black Eyed Peas record, due later this year. This isn’t the first time Papa Roach have been invited to collaborate with another group, but it’s the first time they’ve accepted an offer. “We’ve been holding out to actually work with an artist in… Read more »

WWF And Hard Rock Go Together Like Bizkits, Gravy

Those WWF Smackdown spots just wouldn’t be the same without P.O.D.’s “Alive,” Creed’s “My Sacrifice” and Kid Rock’s “Cocky” blaring in the background. In many cases, shots of wrestlers powerbombing, chokeslamming and clotheslining one another are more captivating than the images in real rock videos. Let’s face it, loud rock and wrestling go together like salted bacon and farm-fresh eggs, the aggressive tones and violent visuals feeding off each other, creating a charged symbiosis of pumping testosterone. With over-the-top sound and sight, all you need is a sweat-and-blood-soaked rag under your nose to create the ultimate sensory experience. “Wrestling and… Read more »

De Niro, Queen Members To Bring 'We Will Rock You' To London Stage

Two of the surviving members of legendary rock band Queen have teamed with actor Robert De Niro to answer the venerable questions: Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Fantasy, apparently. On May 14 at the Dominion Theatre in London, the futuristic new musical “We Will Rock You” will bring the music of Queen to the stage, producers Brian May and Roger Taylor – the former guitarist and drummer for Queen, respectively – and De Niro announced in a press conference Tuesday (March 26). Rather than tell the story of Queen, which came to an end when singer… Read more »

Puddle Of Mudd Deliver No-Frills Rock At Philly Date – Concert Review

No disses, no DJs and no drama – just rock. The Los Angeles band Puddle of Mudd, whose current single “Blurry” is a #1 modern rock hit, tore through an hour-long headlining set of blue-collar rock Thursday night at a sold-out Electric Factory. Puddle of Mudd – Wes Scantlin (vocals and guitar), Paul Phillips (guitar), Doug Ardito (bass) and Greg Upchurchperformed on a stage devoid of props or ornate backdrop. Frontman Scantlin wore everyguy clothes: jeans, T-shirt, windbreaker jacket and a reverse baseball cap. But what the band lacked in show-business dazzle they made up for in verve and intensity.… Read more »

Kid Rock, Pink Honor Aerosmith

Aerosmith are the second artists to achieve “icon” status, as the band will be the subject of mtvICON, an annual show/event honoring one band or recording for its significant contribution to music, music video and pop culture. Last year, the show paid tribute to Janet Jackson. She will open this year’s show with an Aerosmith testimonial. Kid Rock and Pink are the first two artists to sign on to reinterpret classic Aerosmith songs, with more artists to be added. Now in their thirtieth year, Aerosmith themselves will close the show with a performance of their own. The show will be… Read more »

Rock Steady Show Leaves No Doubt About '80s Revival – Review

If Republicans, “Dukes of Hazzard” reruns and an abundance of heavy metal weren’t enough to convince you, No Doubt’s Rock Steady road show leaves little doubt that the 1980s are back. On the tour’s opening night, the Orange County ska-popsters mined flavors from across the retro-’80s spectrum, mixing driving hardcore and rasta riddims with slap-bass funk, new wave synth and pop queen balladry. With a punked-out rhythm section, two dread-stylie horn players, a guitarist straight out of a Duran Duran video and bare-bellied, necktie-wearing Gwen-just-wanna-have-fun-Stefani up front, they even looked the part. The drum set glowed under the Memorial Auditorium’s… Read more »

The Ramones Ushered Into Rock Hall

They represented the anti-establishment, so it was a bit odd to see the Ramones so happy to become part of the music establishment as members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But for the remaining members of the punk rock originators – whose lead singer, Joey Ramone, died last year – Monday night’s induction at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel represented long-overdue respect for the band that helped revolutionize rock with their rapid-fire, guitar-heavy songs. “I’d like to congratulate myself, and thank myself, and give myself a big pat on the back,” joked Dee Dee Ramone. “Thank you Dee Dee,… Read more »

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame welcomed its first members from the new wave and punk eras on Monday night, inducting The Ramones and Talking Heads along with classic rockers Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, soul and R&B icon Isaac Hayes, versatile vocalist Brenda Lee and singer/songwriter Gene Pitney. Legendary guitar sideman Chet Atkins was also inducted, as was Jim Stewart, founder of and driving force behind revolutionary soul music label Stax Records. The hall’s 17th annual induction ceremony got off to a rousing start with Hayes performing his Oscar-winning “Theme from ‘Shaft.”‘ Hayes, who saw eight of his… Read more »

Mest, Unwritten Law Rock Houston – Review

There was no floor collapsing this time, and the only damage was the broken red guitar belonging to Mest’s lead singer, Tony Lovato. Mest and Unwritten Law played to a sold out crowd last Wednesday in Houston, Texas, and although entertaining, it is also a little frightening for an audience who didn’t exactly know what to expect when a musician expresses his temper on stage. During their fifty minute set, afraid that he was going to get hurt, Lovato warned crowd surfers to watch where they were landing and to not hit his microphone stand. As luck would have it,… Read more »
