Fourth-quarter losses skyrocketed at AOL Time Warner Inc. after a staggering $45.5 billion charge to account for the struggling media conglomerate’s plunging value. The company also announced Wednesday that former cable TV mogul Ted Turner is stepping down as vice chairman. In the three months ending Dec. 31, AOL lost $44.9 billion, or $10.04 per share, compared with a loss of $1.8 billion, or 41 cents per share, in the fourth quarter of 2001. An environmental group plans to grow a forest in honor of the late Clash singer-songwriter Joe Strummer’s efforts to counter global warming. Future Forests, a group Strummer helped found in the 1990s, asked fans to donate to help create the living memorial on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. “Joe said, ‘Bands must be contributing to global warming by their buses, equipment trucks and the diesel used to power the stages,’” the spokesman said on condition of anonymity. “‘Can you imagine how much carbon dioxide the pressing and the distribution of a CD creates? Melissa Joan Hart, television’s “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch,” is engaged to rocker Mark Wilkerson of the band Course of Nature, Wilkerson’s publicist said. Wilkerson proposed the day after Christmas, and no wedding date has been set. It will be the first marriage for both. “I knew she was the one a week after we started going out and it’s been that way ever since,” the band’s guitarist and lead vocalist said in a statement. Kelly Osbourne stoked hostilities between the Osbourne family and former Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan at the New York City area radio show, Claus Fest, in Uniondale, New York on Thursday night (December 12). Peter Garrett, the energetic lead singer of Australian rock band Midnight Oil, has quit the band after 25 years. With his distinctive bald head, wild dancing and strident voice, Garrett was one of the most recognizable Australian singers of the last generation. Word has surfaced that the ex-wife of Creed’s Scott Stapp was arrested earlier this month for aggravated battery with a weapon after she hit the famed rocker in the face with a cell phone during an argument in the bedroom of his Orlando, Florida home.
