When Prince, ZZ Top and Jackson Browne are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, they won’t have to look far to see contemporary stars their music influenced. Outkast, Kid Rock, Alicia Keys and Dave Matthews are among those who’ll pay tribute to their musical mentors by inducting this year’s class, organizers announced Thursday (February 19). When you’ve had enough studying, flirting and fraternizing at your college, MTV hopes you’ll tune into its rock and roll music on a revamped channel for universities. Music channel MTV said on Thursday its mtvU venture would be dedicated to U.S. campus life, with new programing starting Jan. 20. Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement in the nonperformer category, the museum foundation said. “Due to Wenner’s vision, Rolling Stone uniquely contributed to the perpetuation and popularity of rock and roll with thoughtful, in-depth and often controversial coverage that legitimized rock’s contribution,” the New York City-based foundation said Monday. “Rolling Stone’s unprecedented access to major artists put the magazine in a class of its own.” Wenner co-founded Rolling Stone with writer Ralph J. Rick Van Santen, a co-president of Goldenvoice, a Los Angeles concert promotion company that ushered punk rock from the fringes of the music scene to a wide audience, died last Sunday at his home in Ventura County of flu-related complications, his Goldenvoice partner Paul Tollett said. He was 41. It looks like Jack White’s broken finger has healed at least well enough to throw punches at other garage rockers. The White Stripes frontman was involved in a brawl with Von Bondies singer/guitarist Jason Stollsteimer Saturday night in Detroit’s Magic Stick club, according to police reports. Stollsteimer, who suffered a bloody nose and bruising to his right eye, was treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital and released. White sustained cuts to his left hand. Fresh from the November release of his self-titled album, Kid Rock is preparing for an arena tour in 2004. The trek will begin with a Jan. 22-23 stand in Saginaw, Mich.; 11 dates have been confirmed so far, through Feb. 14 in Raleigh. Rock will be backed by his band Twisted Brown Trucker — guitarists Kenny Olson and Jason Krause, keyboardist Jimmie Bones and drummer Stefanie Eulinberg.
