Dashboard Confessional, Custom, Abandoned Pools Don't Need No Stinkin' Band

“One-man band”: when you hear that phrase you probably picture a dude on a street corner with a pair of cymbals between his knees, a drum on his back, some kazoos in his mouth and a guitar case full of quarters. Think again. While naming a band after yourself is fine and good for guys like Dave Matthews and Jon Spencer, some band names are actually just cryptic pseudonyms for a single, mad studio genius. The past year has seen an explosion of do-it-yourself-ers, including ex-Eels bassist Tommy Walter with his band Abandoned Pools, stone alone emo-ter Chris Carrabba of… Read more »

A California state senator on Monday launched a legislative assault against the music industry on behalf of recording stars like Courtney Love and Don Henley who have been crusading to free artists from record company control. In announcing the bill at the Future of Music conference in Washington, D.C., Murray said the artist community should take its cue from the… Read more »

Bertelsmann says has enough cash to buy Zomba

German media giant Bertelsmann AG has enough cash to buy the shares it does not own in record company Zomba – home of Britney Spears and ‘N Sync – if founder Clive Calder ever decided to sell, the Financial Times reported on Monday. “Not only would we have the money, but I would be very happy since it is one of the most profitable record companies around. It would be a great asset for us,” Bertelsmann Chief Executive Thomas Middelhoff told the paper. “If you consider the kind of valuation on which a company like (British music group) EMI is… Read more »

Reconciled TLC Recording New Album, Solo Projects

Being a member of TLC means walking a fine line between love and… dislike. The trio’s bickering has been well-documented – enough so that many believed their most recent album, 1999’s Fan Mail, would be their last. The word that Chilli and Left Eye were working on solo albums, while T-Boz was raising a family with her hoo-bangin’ husband Mack 10, all but sealed the threesome’s demise for many. As Chilli tells it, though, while it may be hard for the crazy, sexy and cool trio to live with each other sometimes, it’s even tougher for them to live apart.… Read more »
