Familiar tunes made registers ring at the nation’s music retailers last week as a remix collection, three hits compilations, a reshaped album and a live disc were the top 40 debuts. The music industry is having to rethink its drive towards copy-protecting music CDs, following people-power protests and probing questions from US politicians. BMG in Europe had launched two of its chart CDs, Natalie Imbruglia’s White Lilies Island and Five’s Greatest Hits, with copy protection technology but have now switched production to “clean” unprotected CDs, following consumer complaints. The discs were launched “clean” in Australia. In the US, Universal’s new compilation CD of Fast and Furious rock music is copy-protected but is clearly marked with consumer warnings, unlike previous discs. A new lawsuit filed against MP3.com seeks to hold the San Diego music-locker service liable not only for songs it improperly copied and distributed, but also for every bootleg track exchanged through Napster and other underground file-swapping services. The suit, filed on behalf of 52 independent songwriters and music publishers, accuses MP3.com of “viral” infringement. Former Beatle George Harrison told his fans on Monday “I am feeling fine” after successfully undergoing radiotherapy at a Swiss cancer clinic. A statement from his London lawyer disclosed that the 58-year-old guitarist and singer underwent treatment at the hospital in Bellinzona over a month ago. It said Harrison had a course of radiotherapy. Doctors do not see any need for further treatment. Former Beatle George Harrison is reported to have received treatment at a Swiss cancer clinic – his third battle in the past few years against the disease. Just over 18 months ago, the 58-year-old guitarist and singer survived a life-and-death struggle of a different kind, when a knife-wielding intruder stabbed him in the chest at his home near London.
