Van Dyk To Do First Mix CD

German electronic music guru Paul Van Dyk is set to follow up the success of 2000’s Out There and Back with his first-ever mix CD this fall. The artist, who has reluctantly become a figurehead for trance music, is in the process of putting together a two-disc set called Politics of Dancing (due October 23rd on Ministry of Sound), an album he says will maintain the kind of progressive spacey epic known as the “Paul Van Dyk sound.” “I never did a DJ mix because I didn’t think I could quite bring across the atmosphere of a club,” Van Dyk… Read more »

Tool Stretch Out And Slow Down In Show With King Crimson

There might be a better setting for a Tool concert, but it doesn’t exist in waking life: The prehistoric, rugged beauty of Red Rocks Amphitheater felt almost threatening when serving as the physical backdrop for the band’s volcanic performance on Friday night, which opened a brief tour with prog-rock veterans King Crimson. Flanked by rock formations pushed up from the bubbling earth more than 60 million years ago (and donning a bald head, sporadic body paint and a black leather bodice), Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan looked like an androgynous ambassador of the apocalypse. Judging by the capacity crowd –… Read more »

'NSYNC Seek To Impress With Skills, Not Sales

When they were making Celebrity, ‘NSYNC weren’t fretting about how to follow up a sales record – they were too busy staking out a new sound to carry them into a future far beyond first-week figures, says Justin Timberlake. And besides, he said, it’s just the economy that’s to blame if the album’s opening week comes shy of the 2.4 million copies No Strings Attached sold last year in its first week on shelves. “People probably don’t think we think about this kind of stuff, but if you really wanna get technical about it, the whole country, the economy, is… Read more »

BT And ‘NSync: Pop Goes The Producer

Former American trance golden boy BT (Brian Transeau) and ‘NSync may seem like odd bedfellows but according to BT, it was all very natural for the two seemingly divergent acts to work together on “Pop,” the first track on ‘NSync’s most recent album, Celebrity (Jive). In fact the love fest was so mutual between the teensters and the Los Angeles based dance producer that BT is now working with Justin Timberlake’s girlfriend, Britney Spears, to help produce her new album – better watch out Justin, BT’s a charmer. If you’ve heard BT’s version of “Pop” you know it sounds a… Read more »

Deep Dish Delivery Puts House Spin On 'NSYNC

‘NSYNC just keep digging deeper into the dance music community. First they recruited BT to produce Celebrity’s first single, “Pop,” and now they’ve hired Deep Dish to remix it. The Washington, D.C., house duo, who remixed Madonna’s “Music” and were nominated for the Remixer of the Year Grammy, sought to give the song a wide range of emotions. “It sounds like Basement Jaxx on estrogen,” Deep Dish’s Sharam Tayebi said Thursday (June 14). “It has all these crazy elements, but it’s tough. It has dark elements to it, but it’s kind of a happy song.” Deep Dish’s remix, which was… Read more »

Songbird Software Aims To Keep Track Of Napster

Songbird, the software brainchild of a 20-year-old Internet entrepreneur, was launched on Wednesday with song-swap company Napster firmly in its sights. The technology, billed as the first offered to everyone as an Internet search tool, enables artists and musicians to track down who has done what with their compositions. The software, invented by Utah-based Travis Hill, won the backing of the record industry’s IFPI watchdog and 10 organizations representing artists, songwriters and publishers. Songbird was introduced at IFPI’s London headquarters. “Songbird gives music copyright holders a completely new insight into how Napster is using their music and, if they want… Read more »

Sugar Ray Dream Of Strippers, Kareem And Kung Fu

Sugar Ray recently had a chance to live out their dreams – or at least their dream videos – when the pop-rockers shot a clip for the single “When It’s Over.” “Each guy has their dream sequence – like if they had the video of their choice, what would it be?” drummer Stan Frazier explained on the set of the video shoot over the weekend. Guitarist Rodney Sheppard steps into Bruce Lee’s shoes and kung-fu fights basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; DJ Homicide chills in a strip club featuring imagery pulled from his favorite hip-hop videos; bassist Murphy Karges rocks out… Read more »

Paul Simon, Mystikal, Dave Matthews Headline Jazzfest 2001

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s Web site – Where else in the world but the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival could Paul Simon, Mystikal, the Dave Matthews Band, Celia Cruz, Femi Kuti, the Neville Brothers, Van Morrison, Al Green, Lucinda Williams and more than 400 other acts mix it up with pheasant gumbo, crawfish bread, oyster po-boys and Cajun boudin? If music is the food of love, and Jazzfest is ground zero for the music-as-feast truism, the 32nd annual event – which takes place over seven days between April 27 and May 6 at the city’s Fair Grounds… Read more »

Hanson, Sweet Go Underneath

Their embraceable debut (1997’s Middle of Nowhere, featuring the Number One single “MMMBop”) sold millions of copies and established Hanson as TRL’s preeminent poster-teens. The grittier follow-up (2000’s This Time Around) alienated bubblegum-dependent younger fans and has yet to go platinum in the states. Now the brothers Hanson – Isaac, Taylor and Zac – are hard at work on a record they hope will marry the success of one to the punchy feel of the other and in the process show the world what they’ve know all along: Hanson are a hard-working, musically gifted and educated rock band. Sessions for… Read more »
