Plain White T's Revive the Name Game

There was a time when girls’ names ruled the Hot 100. In 1962, Tommy Roe’s “Sheila” was succeeded by the Four Seasons’ “Sherry.” But it’s become much rarer to see a girl’s name in the No. 1 spot. Until this past week, the only chart-topper with a girl’s name this millennium was “Maria Maria” by Santana featuring the Product G&B, and that was back in 2000. A move from No. 2 to No. 1 finds “Hey There Delilah” (Hollywood Records) by the Plain White T’s on top of the chart. It’s the first time the name “Delilah” has been featured… Read more »

Go, Go Emo Rangers! Fight Back Tears – And Space Robots

Let’s face it: When it comes to defending the planet, five white-belted emo kids would probably be the last crew you’d want on the frontlines (even Captain Planet and those wussy Planeteers would instill more confidence). But in a new short film by two “unemployed” British directors, the fate of the free world rests directly on the scrawny shoulders of five sad sorta-superheroes. The film, called “Mighty Moshin’ Emo Rangers,” was the brainchild of Chris Phillips and Nick Pittom, two twentysomething filmmakers who were barely getting filming gigs for local bands. Their money situation only continued to worsen, and things… Read more »

Kasabian Mix Big Riffs And Dance Beats To Make Noisy Love During War

Used record bins are flooded with albums from swaggering British lads whose bands have conquered England and have their eyes set on cracking the States. Not too many of them can claim to have their music used in two of the most popular TV shows in the country before most Americans have ever heard of them, though. The vaguely scary, beat-crazy sound you might have heard on recent episodes of “Desperate Housewives” and “CSI: Miami” comes courtesy of Kasabian, currently infecting American ears with the intense marriage of druggy beats and massive guitar riffs from their self-titled debut. “We’re going… Read more »

U2 Expert Explains Bono And Crew's Lasting Popularity

This past weekend brought fans of the four boys from Dublin to Toronto for InTO The Heart, a U2 Fan Fest. The conference brought U2 expert B.P. Fallon to town to share his insight on Bono and the gang. Fallon has a rich rock history – he’s been on tour with Led Zeppelin, his Death Disco club nights attract the brightest of stars, he was U2’s DJ on the ZooTV tour and he’s perhaps the world’s ultimate authority on the world’s self-proclaimed biggest band. And although an international fan conference is something that few bands can boast, Fallon says this… Read more »

Banana Boys And Cheese: What's Up With Those 'American Idol' Promo Spots?

“American Idol” fans who cringed when contestant Jon Peter Lewis appeared in a banana suit as part of a promotional segment for Ford during a recent episode can take comfort in knowing they are not alone. “I’ll be honest with you, on a personal basis, I hate the damn things,” Ken Warwick, co-executive producer of the show, admitted. “I come from a whole television system in England that absolutely forbids any interference within the program by any sponsor, by any advertising, or any product placement whatsoever. It’s just completely forbidden. So in truth, yes, I find a lot of them… Read more »

White May Face Assault Rap

Detroit police are investigating a December 13th fight between the White Stripes’ Jack White and Jason Stollsteimer – frontman for another Motor City band, the Von Bondies – and may file assault charges against the former. Though White, 28, produced a Von Bondies record in 2001, he and Stollsteimer, 25, had a falling out since its release. Both were at the Magic Stick nightclub attending a record release party for local band Blanche. According to Stollsteimer, White grew angry when the Von Bondie refused to speak with him and pulled him to the ground. According to a police report, White… Read more »

Jack White Brawls With Fellow Garage Rocker At Detroit Club

It looks like Jack White’s broken finger has healed at least well enough to throw punches at other garage rockers. The White Stripes frontman was involved in a brawl with Von Bondies singer/guitarist Jason Stollsteimer Saturday night in Detroit’s Magic Stick club, according to police reports. Stollsteimer, who suffered a bloody nose and bruising to his right eye, was treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital and released. White sustained cuts to his left hand. The Von Bondies singer told police that White had tried to speak with him in the club, which was hosting a record release party for alt-country rockers… Read more »

Great White Forced To Revamp Benefit Tour Due To Insurance Snafu

A U.S. tour by ’80s metal bands Great White, L.A. Guns and XYZ aimed at raising funds for the families of victims of the Rhode Island nightclub fire has been called off due to an inability to secure insurance. The 55-city tour was to raise money for the Station Family Fund, a nonprofit organization set up to assist the families and survivors of the February fire at the Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, which claimed the lives of 100 victims when a Great White pyrotechnics display went awry and set the club ablaze. The tour was to launch… Read more »
