Grammy Chief Feels 'Betrayed' By Miami Leaders

Grammy chief Michael Greene said in published remarks on Friday he feels “betrayed” by Miami’s civic leaders over the hostile political climate that prompted him to pull the Latin Grammy Awards show out of that city. In a Los Angeles Times interview, Greene said he also doubts the show will be moved any time soon back to Miami, home to such Latin stars as Ricky Martin, Julio Iglesias and Gloria Estefan and the Latin American headquarters for MTV, Sony Music and scores of other record labels. “There would have to be a seismic shift in the political leadership of the… Read more »

Badu, Gray, Scott Sizzle

The seductive R&B star, along with fellow musicians Macy Gray, Jill Scott and Zap Mama, served up five hours of sultry, come-hither jams to a 15,000-plus capacity crowd at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, Wednesday. “Ladies, women, bitches, hos, hoochie mamas,” Gray addressed the crowd, “we’re here to celebrate one of the most magnificent, most miraculous, things ever created. We want to celebrate the dick!” With many male audience members covering their faces, Gray then led the women in the house in a chant of, “Dick, dick, dick…” Unrestrained sexuality was the theme of the festival, meant… Read more »

Tool Stretch Out And Slow Down In Show With King Crimson

There might be a better setting for a Tool concert, but it doesn’t exist in waking life: The prehistoric, rugged beauty of Red Rocks Amphitheater felt almost threatening when serving as the physical backdrop for the band’s volcanic performance on Friday night, which opened a brief tour with prog-rock veterans King Crimson. Flanked by rock formations pushed up from the bubbling earth more than 60 million years ago (and donning a bald head, sporadic body paint and a black leather bodice), Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan looked like an androgynous ambassador of the apocalypse. Judging by the capacity crowd –… Read more »

Punk Bands Rock Out To Plea For Peace

Ditching the usual motive to profit through stinging ticket costs and merch fees, one 2001 tour is ready to hit the road on Aug 23 in hopes of bringing the profits back to the people, making the benefits of attendance more than just musical. “One of the primary goals is to provide youth with both the knowledge and the resources to overcome the dilemmas they face today,” the official press release for the Plea For Peace-Take Action Tour states. Founded with a charitable purpose just as fierce as the rock performances it’s delivering, the outing seems to be riding on… Read more »

Incubus will release their fourth album, Morning View, on October 23rd. Working once again with producer Scott Litt, the band told Rolling Stone that the new material is “some of the heaviest music we’ve ever written [and] at the same time some of the most beautiful we’ve ever written.” A video shoot for the first single, “Wish You Were Here,” is planned for next month, and there will be pressure for Incubus to outdo themselves, as their video for “Drive” (from 1999’s Make Yourself) is up for Best Group Video at September’s MTV Video Music Awards. Pop Acts Put Out Records Faster

Time was, pop stars who hit it big would ride out the success of an album and then lie low for awhile, presumably restoring their creative energies and also whetting the public’s appetite for the next record. Not any more. Today’s acts – wary of fickle fans and short attention spans – are pumping out albums in quick succession so as not to lose the spotlight to someone else. “Unfortunately right now, you have to just hit while you’re hot,” said teen pop starlet Jessica Simpson, who released her self-titled second album in June, a year and a half after… Read more »
