Sony Licenses Music for Song-Swapping CenterSpan


CenterSpan Communications Corp. on Thursday said it struck a deal to distribute Sony Music Entertainment’s music on its peer-to-peer service, marking the first time a major record label has licensed its content to a file-sharing company. CenterSpan agreed to pay Sony Music, a unit of Sony Corp., about $2 million in cash plus 283,556 shares and a warrant to buy 189,037 additional shares of its common stock at an exercise price at $8.11 per share, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Parents Of Child Who Drowned At Tommy Lee's House File Suit


The parents of the boy who drowned at Tommy Lee’s home last summer are suing the rocker for wrongful death and negligence. Actress Ursula Karven and television producer James Veres filed a lawsuit on February 15 in Los Angeles Superior Court accusing Lee of failing to provide proper supervision of their 4-year-old son, Daniel, who died at Lee’s Malibu mansion on June 16. The lawsuit claims Daniel, who had no swimming experience, and other children were left unsupervised in a swimming pool at Lee’s home. Wiser Named CTO at Sony Music


Sony Music Entertainment Senior Vice President Al Smith this week announced that Philip R. Wiser has been named Chief Technology Officer. Wiser will be based in New York and will report directly to Smith. In this newly-created position, Wiser will be responsible for overseeing technical operations of the company’s existing digital media initiatives, including electronic music distribution (EMD) systems, as well as for developing and implementing new digital media technologies. Liquid Audio Settles Patent Litigation Suit With Intouch Group


Liquid Audio, Inc., announced today that it has reached a settlement with Intouch Group in a patent litigation suit filed against the company in March 2000. The suit was originally filed in Federal Court in the Northern District of California (Case No. C-00-1156 DLJ) against Amazon.com, DiscoverMusic, Entertaindom, Liquid Audio, Inc., Listen.com and Muze. Terms of the settlement with Intouch remain confidential. Pressplay hopes to run on Macintosh this year


Pressplay, a Web music service owned by Sony Corp. and Vivendi Universal Thursday said it hopes to make its online service available to Apple Computer Inc.’s Macintosh computers sometime this year. “We are hoping that sometime this year that Pressplay will be available (on Macs), although we can’t guarantee,” said Andy Schuon, chief executive officer of Pressplay, during a conference call hosted by research firm Jupiter Media Metrix. KaZaA suspends music downloads pending Dutch court ruling


Internet company KaZaA BV on Thursday said it suspended downloads of its popular software that lets users trade songs online pending a decision in a copyright lawsuit filed against it in a Dutch court. “Download of the KaZaA Media desktop software is temporarily and voluntarily suspended pending Dutch court decision on January 31,” the Amsterdam-based company said in a message on its Web site at (http://www.kazaa.com). Universal Music Group Tuesday announced some of the initial album titles slated for release on the new Super Audio CD format, which incorporates multi-channel sound capabilities and some copyright protection measures.
