Nirvana Song 'You Know You're Right' May See Release By Year's End

Courtney Love, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic continue to bump heads about a lot of things, but attorneys for both sides say all three musicians think the unreleased Nirvana song “You Know You’re Right” should be in the hands of the band’s fans. They’re aiming to issue it on a Nirvana best-of collection by the end of the year, and the compilation will be followed by a box set of rarities, then a single best-of-the-box CD. That’s if all goes well. If all does not go well, we may not get anything, as efforts to release the material could be… Read more »

Dave Grohl Says Nirvana Legal Battle Not Worth The Anguish

The Courtney Love vs. Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic case is on its way to court, and in late September the world should know more about the fate of unreleased Nirvana material. But Grohl is beginning to question whether all the legal mumbo jumbo is worth the hassle. In April the surviving members of Nirvana asked that Love be forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to test her sanity, and later in the month a judge denied the request, causing Grohl to bang his head against the wall as forcefully as he pummels his drum kit. “At the end of… Read more »

Snippets Of Nirvana Song At Center Of Lawsuit Appear Online

Portions of the last recorded Nirvana track surfaced online this week, bringing a new twist to the legal debate between Courtney Love and Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. Live bootlegs of “You Know You’re Right” have circulated for years, but until now the studio version has gone mostly unheard. (Love spun the song at a London club in March and provided part of it to “Access Hollywood.”) Although she claims to possess more than 100 tapes of unheard material from the late Kurt Cobain, “You Know You’re Right” has been singled out as a huge potential hit by Love and… Read more »

Nirvana Members Seek to Oust 'Prima Donna' Love

Calling her a greedy, volatile “prima donna,” the two surviving members of influential grunge rock group Nirvana have sued to have the widow of Kurt Cobain thrown off the board controlling the band’s musical legacy. Cobain’s widow Courtney Love last June sued to block the release of a boxed set of Nirvana greatest hits that would have coincided with the 10th anniversary of the band’s chart-topping “Nevermind” album. Now the surviving band members, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, have counter-sued, saying Love is incapable of handling her obligations to their three-way partnership controlling the band’s music. “In truth,… Read more »

Courtney Love Sues Nirvana

Courtney Love filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group, Geffen Records, the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic – and Nirvana L.L.C., a partnership formed in 1997 to manage the affairs of Nirvana, in a Los Angeles Superior Court on September 28th. The suit cites three causes of action, including declaratory relief, asking that the contract between Nirvana and Geffen be recinded and that all rights pertaining to Nirvana revert to Love, and breach of contract for an undisclosed amount. The contract dispute echoes Love’s own with Universal regarding her band Hole. Love is trying to… Read more »

Nirvana Legal Battle: 120 Unreleased Tapes At Stake

As Courtney Love and Nirvana’s surviving members face off in a legal battle over the band’s legacy, 120 tapes of unreleased material featuring Kurt Cobain sit in a vault – and that’s where they’ll remain, says a source close to the Cobain estate, until Nirvana’s record company gives the band a better deal. The collection includes recordings of the late singer alone as well as tapes of the band throughout its career, including Nirvana’s first show in Seattle in April 1988, four-track basement demos, bedroom tapes of Cobain singing and strumming on new songs as well as embryonic versions of… Read more »

Courtney Love Sues Grohl And Novoselic, Blocks Nirvana Rarity

Courtney Love has blocked the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic – from releasing one of the band’s final tracks, and she’s suing them for control of the group’s legacy. A Seattle judge has granted Love a preliminary injunction preventing the release of a Nirvana song called “You Know You’re Right,” which Grohl and Novoselic planned to include on a Nirvana box set due this fall. Nirvana recorded the Kurt Cobain-penned tune in January 1994, three months before his suicide. “The fight is over control of Nirvana,” said Warren Rheaume, attorney for Grohl and Novoselic. “Hopefully… Read more »

Early Nirvana, Other Indie Music Still Thrives On Napster

Imagine a ruthlessly efficient army of robots running wild through the nation’s record stores, removing every bit of major label product from the shelves, from Britney to Bob Dylan – but leaving behind CDs from independent labels. Since March, that unlikely scenario has taken place, more or less, on the free but legally precarious online music bazaar that is Napster. A court injunction stemming from the major labels’ copyright infringement suit against Napster has forced it to block access to copyrighted songs – but labels have the burden of naming the songs in question. And many small and mid-size indie… Read more »
